Planned Parenthood Makes Abortion a “Priority” Says Pro-Choice Activist

One pro-choice activist is honest about Planned Parenthood and the abortions they performed. She admits that abortion is a priority for Planned Parenthood, and that they make most of their money off of performing them. These are things that most pro-choicers deny, so this is a rare moment of honesty.

“…providing abortions is part of the mission of Planned Parenthood, and they do make it a priority. It’s a necessary service, after all…. a complete shut-down of abortion services would create a cash flow problem for them.  Abortions are 3 percent of the actual services Planned Parenthood provides, but they constitute a larger chunk of their income….Which makes sense; abortions simply cost more than Pap smears and birth control pills, and Planned Parenthood provides a huge chunk of all the abortions in the country, even for women who get their standard gynecological care elsewhere.  The reason for that should be obvious; a lot of women’s regular gynecologists don’t provide abortion, and so if you want an abortion, your doctor is likely to refer you to Planned Parenthood.”

Planned Parenthood President: Ultrasounds before Abortions Are a “Dangerous Agenda”

Referring to a bill supported by Rick Perry that would allow women to see an ultrasound of their unborn baby before going through with an abortion, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards said the following. Keep in mind that Planned Parenthood routinely does ultrasounds anyway to gauge the length of pregnancy and rule out ectopic pregnancies. Women are just not allowed to look at the screen or discouraged from doing so.

“Why is Rick Perry so cruel to women?… Rick Perry is running for president, and if he wins, you can bet he’ll force this dangerous agenda on every woman in every state. If we don’t stand up to him now, women may suffer the consequences for years to come.”

Maggie Haberman  “ Richards: Perry ‘so cruel’ to women” Politico, Sept 1, 2011

Apparently, seeing an ultrasound before an abortion is  something that Planned Parenthood considers dangerous– perhaps if fewer women choose to have abortions, it would cut into the organization’s profits.

Read about Abby Johnson, Planned Parenthood director, whose change of heart happened after watching an abortion on the ultrasound.

Pro-Choice Activist “Shocked” at Her Feelings

Pro-choice social scientist Angela Neustatter:

“Although I have always marched and campaigned for a woman’s right to choose… when it came to deciding to end a pregnancy, I was shocked by the distress and confusion I felt. I did not like having to take personal responsibility for ending a life.”

James D Slack Abortion, Execution, and the Consequences of Taking Life (New Brunswick: Transaction Publishers, 2009) page 61

This pro-choice activist clearly knows that abortion is taking the life of a baby. She seemed to know this intuitively, even when she was campaigning for abortion rights.

President of Catholics for Free Choice: Abortion is Gruesome

The president of Catholics For Free Choice, Francis Kissling, on late-term abortion:

“It’s gruesome. I think we serve ourselves well by saying that. We are so clinical and abstracted from these realities in our public presentations, it turns people off.”

Sharon Lerner “The Fetal Frontier: Pro-choice advocates wrestle with the uncomfortable” The Village Voice. Nov 30 2004

Below is a 20 week old unborn baby, at an age where he can be legally aborted in any state in the US. These are the abortions Kissling is referring to.

Pro-Choice Writer Attacks Pro-Lifers

Pro-Choice writer Amanda Marcotte has some “choice” words to say about pro-lifers:

“ If they applied their approach to sex when approaching food, they’d be running around jeering at people in restaurants for eating for pleasure, and they’d run ads showing the contents of the toilet after #2 with language suggesting that since poo is disgusting, the practice of eating for pleasure should be ended.”

Amanda Marcotte “Civility? For the Anti-Choice Movement, It’s An Alien Concept” RH Reality Check September 25, 2011

First of all, Marcotte uses a straw man, assuming that pro-lifers are against sex – which is not true. Second of all, she completely misrepresents the reason why pro-lifers use pictures of aborted babies. These pictures are not effective because they are “disgusting”, but because they show the severed arms and legs and crushed skulls of aborted babies. When looking at the pictures, one cannot deny that human life is taken in each abortion. See pictures here.

Planned Parenthood Opposes Giving Women Options

Louisiana requires abortion clinics to post signs giving women more information and telling them they cannot be coerced into an abortion against their will.

Here is the sign:

How could abortion clinics have a problem with this? After all, don’t clinics counsel their abortion patients and tell them these things anyway? Apparently not. Planned Parenthood fought this law – they called the signs “offensive.”

Why does Planned Parenthood consider it offensive to tell a woman she cannot be coerced into an abortion she doesn’t want? What are they find unacceptable that she be offered options, told her there is help for her if she chooses not to have an abortion? If they are pro-choice, why are they upset with the sign?

Pro-Choice Leaders Discuss the Effectiveness of Ultrasounds In Teaching the Humanity of Unborn Babies

In an article in the Weekly Standard, the author says:

Two pro-choice leaders, Kate Michelman and Frances Kissling, acknowledged three years ago that “antiabortionists” had gained a significant advantage. Supporters of abortion, they wrote in the Los Angeles Times, “have had a hard time dealing with the increased visibility of the fetus.” To “regain the moral high ground,” they must deal with “a world that is radically changed from 1973,” when the Roe v. Wadedecision legalized abortion nationwide.

They are referring to pictures like the one below, which shows an unborn baby in the first trimester, the time when most abortions are performed

It is obvious that these images change hearts and minds, and pro-choice activists can no longer get away with arguing that the unborn baby is a clump of cells or blob of tissue. People can see the evidence with their own eyes. In fact, according to the article, 80 to 90 percent of the women who have sonograms at pregnancy centers choose to have their baby.

Perhaps this is why there is such a campaign against crisis pregnancy centers by pro-choicers who want to shut them down or at least deny them access to ultrasound machines. Pro-choice organizations bitterly fight laws that would require a woman to be offered the chance to view an ultrasound before her abortion.

Pro-Choice Writer Comments on the Silent Scream

A pro-choice author comments on The Silent Scream, an antiabortion movie that shows an unborn baby being aborted on ultrasound. Planned Parenthood pulled all the stops out to discredit this movie, because it swayed many people towards the pro-life cause.

While these facts may, as Planned Parenthood says, speak loudly, it’s unlikely that they say what the prochoice groups hope, since they put the fetus, even a televised facsimile, on center stage, precisely where prochoice groups don’t want it. Assume the film is wrong and the Planned Parenthood brochure is right. Assume that was a fetal yawn and not a scream. None of the experts contested that it was a fetal mouth, and that it was pan of a fetal head, attached to a fetal spine, and that it had arms andlegs, fingers and eyes.  ….

In fact, we need neither The Silent Scream nor a degree in fetal physiology to tell us what we already know: that abortion is the eradication of human life and should be avoided whenever possible. Should it be legal? Yes, since the alternatives are worse. Is it moral? Perhaps, depending on what’s at stake.

Pro-Choice Activist on Abortion and Rape

One pro-choice author said the following:

“To defend abortion with confidence, we must first recognize that institutional opposition to the right is part of a broader campaign to undermine women’s autonomy and equality… Abortion is only one piece of the puzzle.  When this puzzle is assembled, the image that emerges is of a women subjected, not a fetus saved.  For example, it is illuminating that “right to life” leaders generally tolerate abortion in cases of rape or incest.  The fetus conceived by rape is biologically and morally indistinguishable from the fetus conceived by voluntary intercourse.  But in the view of our opponents, the rape victim is innocent while the woman who chooses to have sex is tainted.  For them, it is the woman’s innocence or guilt that determines whether she should be allowed to have an abortion or forced to bear a child.”

“Caitlin Borgmann and Catherine Weiss “Beyond Apocalypse and Apology: A Moral Defense of Abortion” Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health volume 35, January/February 2003

Webmaster’s Comment: I thought this was interesting because it shows a pro-choice interpretation of why so many pro-lifers support abortion when it’s a case of rape or incest.  They pick up on the inconsistency of that stand.  What she says is true that the baby is still a baby whether or not it was conceived through voluntary sex or through rape.

It is also true that many women who get pregnant from rape don’t want to have abortions, and many who have regret it. To read some of their stories, go here.

Author Advocates for Legal Abortion

Pro-choice author Janet Hadley on the reasons abortion must remain legal. She admits in her book that abortion is the taking of a life.

“Without cheap, safe, people friendly contraception as well as the legal and safe means to end unwanted pregnancy, “anatomy is destiny” and women’s lives are still gruesome game of health roulette.” (emphasis author’s)
