Former abortionist records abortion on ultrasound, is horrified by what he saw

In 1984, the late Dr. Bernard Nathanson created the groundbreaking video “The Silent Scream,” which showed a baby being aborted via ultrasound. He was the cofounder of the pro-abortion group NARAL, and performed many abortions before he became pro-life.

In his memoir, he wrote:

By 1984, however, I had begun to ask myself more questions about abortion: what actually goes on in an abortion? I had done many, but abortion is a blind procedure. The doctor does not see what he’s doing. He puts an instrument into a uterus and he turns on a motor, and the suction machine goes on and something is vacuumed out; it ends up as a little pile of meat in a gauze bag.

I wanted to know what happened, so in 1984 I said to a friend of mine, who was doing 15 or maybe 20 abortions a day, “Look, do me a favor, Jay. Next Saturday, when you doing all these abortions, put an ultrasound device on the mother and tape it for me.”

He did, and when he looked at the tapes with me in an editing studio, he was so affected that he never did another abortion. I, though I had not done an abortion in five years, was shaken to the very roots of my soul by what I saw.

Former abortionist, now pro-life, speaks about ultrasounds

Dr. Bernard Nathanson, who did thousands of abortions but is now pro-life:

“Ultrasound technology has been really the apparatus which has put the window in the womb. This was the first time we really could see the baby. Up till that time we never could. I mean, x-rays were static. You couldn’t really use x-rays to prove or disprove much of anything about the fetus. But ultrasound gives us these very clear, precise pictures, allows us to stimulate the child, see how it breathes, see how it moves, see how it swallows, see how it urinates, see how everything happens.

Now, there’s been a new advance in this ultrasound technology which is known as transvaginal sonography. It’s very exciting. [Before] pictures were great, but they don’t compare to these pictures – it’s valuable for very early pregnancies.

We can see the gestational sac – the little sac of the pregnancy at two weeks following fertilization now with transvaginal sonography. [We] can see the heart beginning to beat at around 3 to 3 1/2 weeks now. So this has pushed back or updated a great many of our data about the unborn baby.

And I don’t doubt that there are new technologies coming even now; for example, color ultrasound which is going to give us even clearer, more vivid pictures and increase our knowledge about the unborn patient here.”

Jewish former abortionist speaks of “abortion holocaust”

Jewish former abortionist Dr. Bernard Nathanson said to an audience in Canada, where he was speaking:

“I’m going to set it against my Jewish heritage and the Holocaust in Europe. The abortion holocaust is beyond the ordinary discourse of morality and rational condemnation. It is not enough to pronounce it absolutely evil… The abortion industry is a new event, severed from connections with traditional presuppositions of history, psychology, politics, and morality…This is an evil torn free of its moorings in reason and causality, and ordinary secular corruption raised to unimaginable powers of magnification and limitless extremity.”

Former abortionist Bernard Nathanson: Embryo is human being

Former abortionist Bernard Nathanson:

There is simply no doubt that even the early embryo is a human being. All its genetic coding and all its features are indisputably human. As to being, there is no doubt that it exists, is alive, is self-directed, and is not the the same being as the mother–and is therefore a unified whole.

Abortion Is Not “Merely Suctioning out A Mass of Cells”

Dr. Bernard Nathanson, former abortionist stated:

“In the early 70s we began to use machinery, apparatus, and instruments which allowed us to finally put a larger and much more sophisticated window into the womb.

But for the first time as a physician and as an ethical person, I began to understand that more was involved in an abortion than merely suctioning out a mass of cells, a few grams of tissue. I began to be aware that there was something here which had a moral density to it which commanded respect.”

Were We Saving Babies Or Killing Them?

Dr. Bernard Nathanson, former abortionist who performed thousands and thousands of abortions, describes how he would be aborting a baby on one floor of a hospital and then trying to save a baby of the same age on another floor.

“In the mid-70s, I would be up on one floor, putting the hypertonic saline into a woman 23 weeks pregnant, and on another floor down, I would have someone in labor at 23 weeks, and I would be trying to salvage this baby. The nurses were caught in the same bind, the same moral whipsaw. What were we doing here, were we saving babies or were we killing them?”

This baby was born at 23 weeks. Abortion is legal at this age in every state of the United States.

Dr. Bernard Nathanson Records an Ultrasound Video of a Baby Being Aborted

The late Dr. Bernard Nathanson performed thousands of abortions before becoming pro-life. He claims that the reason he stopped doing abortions was because he began to have doubts about the humanity of the unborn baby due to advances in technology, including the availability of ultrasounds. He made the famous film “The Silent Scream” which had a major impact on the abortion debate in the 1980s when it was produced. He says this of the taping of the famous video:

Dr. Bernard Nathanson is not the only abortion provider to be affected by an ultrasound guided abortion. Abby Johnson, the former manager of a Planned Parenthood clinic, became pro-life on the spot after witnessing an ultrasound abortion of a 13-week-old unborn baby. She watch the baby torn apart on the screen and, in that instant, realized how wrong she had been in supporting and promoting abortion. Joan Appleton, another abortion clinic worker, had a similar conversion when she saw an ultrasound guided abortion, and so the baby struggling to get away from the instruments.

Dr. Bernard Nathanson on Why He Stopped Doing Abortions

“I ran the largest abortion clinic in the world for 2 years. I had no conflicts whatsoever at the time I was doing the abortions. I changed my mind because the new scientific data which we were getting from advanced technology persuaded me that we could not indiscriminately continue to slaughter what was demonstrably a human being.”
