Pro-Choice “Facts”: Fetal Development

Sometimes abortion advocates say things that cannot be squared with the facts of science.

For example, when a pro-life group displayed large photos of aborted fetuses on the sides of trucks in Los Angeles, Feminist Majority Foundation Vice President Katherine Spillar was quoted saying:

“The typical abortion is done at 8 weeks or less and when we are talking about a pre-embryo the size of a grain of rice.”

She was quoted in Washington Times August 23, 2001 “A Vehicle for Change.”

According to The Developing Human: Clinically Oriented Embryology, 6th ed. Keith L. Moore, Ph.D. & T.V.N. Persaud, Md., (Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders Company, 1998), the crown-rump length of an eight week fetus is about the size of a quarter. (Note that this measurement does not include the legs) An embryo the size of a grain of rice would be only three to four weeks old- and very few abortions are performed that early.

Here is a picture of an eight week old unborn, taken by Andrzej Zachwieja and Jan Walczewski under the direction of Professor Andrzej Skawina of Collegium Medicum, Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland.

Incidentally, according to the Center for Disease Control cited in the MMWR, Nov.29, 2002 vol51 No55-9, 18% take place at 8 weeks with roughly 41-42% taking place later, adding up to nearly 445,000 a year.

Abortion clinic spokesperson Ellen Kreuger stated to the Winnipeg Sun (cited in Kansans for Life May 1991, p 9) that the unborn baby was

“a frog-like thing…without a heartbeat, brain, eyes, or internal organs.”

An embryo’s heart begins to beat around the 18-24th day after conception.(J.M. Tanner, G. R. Taylor, and the Editors of Time-Life Books, Growth, New York: Life Science Library, 1965) Eye development begins in the fourth week and is well underway by the sixth. (K. Moore, Before We Were Born, 3rd ed., 1989, p. 278) The brain develops very early and brain waves have been recorded by six to seven weeks after conception. (J. Goldenring, “Development of the Fetal Brain,” New England Jour. of Med., Aug. 26, 1982, p. 564) All body systems are present at 8 weeks. (Hooker & Davenport, The Prenatal Origin of Behavior, University of Kansas Press, 1952)

From a booklet entitled “Organizing for Action.” Prepared by Vicki Z. Kaplan for the National Abortion Rights Action League, 250 West 57th Street, New York, N.Y. 10019. 51 pages, no date.

“Describe how quick and safe the procedure is, how pleasant the clinic, how relaxed the patient, how the conceptus looks at ten weeks – a small bloody mass, very jelly-like, about an inch long, and weighing about 3/4 of an ounce. Absolutely no arms and legs – no “baby” at all!”

See actual pictures of babies aborted at 10 weeks here

Here is a picture of a sonogram of an unborn baby at 10 weeks.

In a Planned Parenthood fact sheet, found on their website entitled “The Facts Speak Louder than ‘The Silent Scream” one statement made is:

“A fetus of 12 weeks cannot in any way be compared to a fully formed functioning person. At this stage only rudiments of the organ systems are present. The fetus is unable to sustain life outside the woman’s womb, it is incapable of conscious thought; it is incapable of essential breathing.”

Several assertions in this paragraph fly in the face of the known facts about fetal development. Even worse, the facts I am about to relate have been known to reputable scientists for decades. It is almost impossible for these statements to be the product of ignorance. They are either signs of an unbelievable amount of callous stupidity or deliberate lies.

By eight weeks, all body organs are present in the fetus. This was reported in Hooker & Davenport, The Prenatal Origin of Behavior, University of Kansas Press, 1952. Yes, 1952- and not a single study has ever contradicted this.

Further,

“By 11 weeks, all body systems are working.” “Life Before Birth,” Life Magazine, Apr. 30, 1965, p. 13

As for breathing:

“By 11 to 12 weeks (3 months), he [the fetus] is breathing fluid steadily and continues so until birth. At birth, he will breathe air. He does not drown by breathing fluid with-in his mother, because he obtains his oxygen from his umbilical cord. This breathing develops the organs of respiration.” “Life Before Birth,” Life Magazine, Apr. 30, 1965, p. 13

In addition, information recently came out that clinics were sending fetal parts, including eyes and organs, to laboratories to be experimented on. A pamphlet from a tissue harvesting company called “Opening Lines” advertised fetal tissue, including “livers less than 8 weeks for $125 (“discounted if significantly fragmented”) spleens over 8 weeks for $75, and eyes for $50-100 depending on fetal age with “40% discounts for individual eye.” (See chart below)

If fetal organs from babies under 8 weeks can be labeled and sold, then a twelve week unborn must have more than “rudiments of organs.”

And from BabyCentre.co.uk, which is a site that provides fetal development and other information for pregnant women, and is NOT a pro-life site but a neutral one:

Under the 12 week heading:

“Measuring from the crown of his head to his rump, your 2.5-inch/ 6-centimetre fetus has all his parts, from tooth buds to toenails. Your baby is busy kicking and stretching; his movements are so fluid they look like water ballet. Fingers and toes have fully separated. Now the fetus’s main task during the next six months will be to grow larger and stronger until it can survive on its own outside the womb.”

From pregnancy.org, page on week 12, here are some characteristics listed:

— Intestines move farther into your child’s body
— His or her liver begins to function – Responsible for cleansing the blood, storing nutrients, and providing needed chemicals, this is an important event!
— The pancreas begins to produce insulin

Also note:

“At nine weeks, the embryo’s ballooning brain allows it to bend its body, hiccup, and react to loud sounds. At week ten, it moves its arms, “breathes” amniotic fluid in and out, opens its jaw, and stretches. Before the first trimester is over, it yawns, sucks, and swallows, as well as feels and smells. By the end of the second trimester, it can hear; toward the end of pregnancy, it can see.”

This is from the article “Fetal Psychology” by Janet L. Hopson, Psychology Today, October 1998

These fetal development sources present quite a different picture than Planned Parenthood!

Pro-choice activist Leonard Peikoff, in his article “Abortion Rights are Pro-Life”(www.AynRand.org)says the following:

“The status of the embryo in the first trimester is the basic issue that cannot be sidestepped. The embryo is clearly pre-human; only the mystical notions of religious dogma treat this clump of cells as constituting a person… what it [the unborn] actually is during the first trimester is a mass of relatively undifferentiated cells that exist as a part of a woman’s body. If we consider what it is rather than what it may become, we must acknowledge that the embryo under three months is something far more primitive than a frog or a fish.”

See the picture below:

an unborn baby at seven weeks

Here is what this baby would look like after an abortion.

Pro-Choice activists have to work hard to distort the facts of fetal development in order to convince people that the unborn baby, even when she so clearly resembles a human being, is not a living person.

Abortion at 10 Weeks pictures

This page is about abortion at 10 weeks and has pictures of what an abortion looks like at 10 weeks. If you are thinking of getting an abortion at 10 weeks, this is some information you may want to know. Here is a sonogram of a ten week old baby in the womb.

From The Endowment for Human Development

abortion at 10 weeks

Before you look at the pictures of the babies aborted at 10 weeks, I want to share something with you. If you are woman considering abortion at 10 weeks, and you came to this page wanting to find out more, I want to talk to you from the heart and share some information with you.  If you are not a woman seeking an abortion at 10 weeks, and/or don’t want to read my message, just scroll down to see the pictures.

First I want to tell you a little more about your baby. I’m getting this info from the site Endowment for Human Development, a scientific website affiliated with National Geographic. It has no ties to the prolife movement.

The baby inside you has had a beating heart for 7 weeks now. He or she has brain that is giving off waves.   Your baby responds to touch and will how a startle reaction when he or she is touched with something.  The baby will pull away and react when the abortion instruments come at her. Some scientists believe she can feel the pain of being ripped apart. She can have the hiccups. She is already right or left handed. If she is a girl she has ovaries and a uterus of her own. Believe it or not, he or she not only has hands and fingers, but also fingerprints. These fingerprints mark her as a unique individual who has never existed before in all of history and will never exist again.

Jewels Green worked in an abortion clinic. Her clinic only provided 1st trimester abortions. She held women’s hands, watched women cry as they had their abortions. And in the backroom, she handled the broken pieces of the babies, holding the aborted babies feet up to a little chart to verify how far along the pregnancies were for the clinic’s paperwork. She witnessed abortion at 10 weeks. Even in abortion at 10 weeks, many of the babies were fully  formed, like the pictures you just saw. She told me that after each abortion, she had to look through the torn apart remains and make sure there were two arms, two legs, one head ,etc. Any parts left behind could cause an infection in the mother.  In a book by pro-choice author Wendy Simonds called Abortion at Work, clinic worker “Risa’ says:

“I hate it when people put it [the aborted fetus] together to look like a baby. I hate that…

On page 86-87 of the same book, Simonds says all the clinic workers she interviewed told her “they never look at the face” when processing ’tissue’ from abortions.

Right now you may feel frightened, worried and alone. I don’t know your situation, but I know there are places out there that can help you. There are these places called Crisis Pregnancy Centers. These centers exist all over the world. They can help with all kinds of things. The one in my town providers counseling, help finding medical care, a place to live if the woman is homeless, baby clothes, maternity clothes, cribs, diapers, information about applying for benefits if you choose to, job training, help finding a job, and even day care.

Also, most of these places will do an ultrasound. Most abortion clinics will do an ultrasound too, but they will charge you for it. The crisis pregnancy center will do one for free. If you DO decide to have an abortion, and you tell the clinic you have already had an ultrasound to verfiy length of pregnancy, they may say you don’t need another one- and you’ve just saved yourself a hundred dollars. The crisis pregnancy centers can’t stop you from having an abortion, no one can, abortion is legal. But they can give you information about abortion’s risks and alternatives you may not get at the clinic. And all their help is FREE. Whereas an abortion clinic is a business that makes profit and charges for everything it offers. The main reason abortion clinics have for turning away women and sending them home is not health problems, but lack of money. The owner of one abortion clinic said in the Chicago-Sun Times:  (he didn’t realize he was talking to a reporter)

“We have to sell abortions. We have to use all the tactics we can because just like my other businesses [a trucking firm, a pollution control business, and a real estate sales office] we have competition. Now, we have to go by the rules, but rules have to be broken if we are gonna get things done.”

Former abortion clinic worker Nina Whitten says:

“Every single transaction that we did was cash money. We wouldn’t take a check, or even a credit card. If you didn’t have the money, forget it. It wasn’t unusual at all for me to take $10,000 to $15,000 a day to the bank – in cash. It’s a lie when they tell you they’re doing it to help women because they’re not. They’re doing it for the money.”

There are MANY more quotes like this here.

Abortion clinics can only stay open if they make money. They even charge for pregnancy tests, often many times more than you would pay buying one at the supermarket (and its the same test). They don’t make any money if you walk out and have the baby.  Since they only make money if you abort the baby, they may not tell you about abortion’s risks or how developed the baby is. They may not tell you anything that would convince you not to have an abortion. But a crisis pregnancy center makes no money either way you decide. So you may get more honest information.

I will give you the numbers and contact info for the pregnancy centers if you scroll down.

But first please look at some of the pictures of what will happen to your baby at 10 weeks if she or he is aborted.

Here is an excerpt from an article by Jewels Green, who I mentioned before:

“Working in the autoclave room was never, ever easy. I saw my lost child in every jar of aborted baby parts. One night after working autoclave my nightmares about dead babies were so gruesome and terrifying and intense I met with the clinic’s director to talk about my feelings. She was very understanding, open and honest, and painfully forthright when she told me, “What we do here is end a life. Pure and simple. There is no disputing this fact.”

And now the crisis pregnancy centers:

Birthright is an excellent organization that helps women considering abortion. They have centers mostly in English speaking countries. They are not affiliated with any religion. I called them once. When I told them I was pro-life, they made a point to tell me they were “not political” They will not try to sway your decision. They have a 24 hour hotline. Please call them at 1-800 550 4900

In the United Sates, Carenet is a Christian group of crisis pregnancy centers. They can help in many ways. Their page has an anonymous chat and they too have a hotline, as well as a directory you can search to find a center near you. Go here.

And here is an international directory of pregnancy help.

If you have had an abortion and need support, here are some links for you to try.

There are other options for you than abortion. What about adoption? A lot of women feel they can’t “give away” their baby. But adoption is not the same as it once was. Now there is open adoption, where you can be in touch with the family that raises your child and even be a part of that child’s life. I have a friend who is  therapist, who says that her clients who give babies up for adoption do much better emotionally than those who have abortions- because they know their babies are alive and happy and not dead. Another person I know gave her baby to a couple in Canada. Now she and the family are close and she spends every Christmas with the couple. She had another daughter, who she kept, and the girls are growing up like cousins. She didn’t lose a baby- she gained a family.

Please also know that abortion can cause a lot of heartache to you, the mother. Several huge studies in Finland that took medical records from several countries found that women who abort have a higher rate of needing psychiatric treatment both inpatient and outpatient and the suicide rate for women who abort is 6-7 times that of women who don’t. For teenagers, another study found a 10x higher suicide rate. Here are some studies.

Although women very rarely die of abortion at 10 weeks, there are other risks. Having an abortion at 10 weeks can create scar tissue on the uterus which can cause tubal (ectopic) pregnancy, a potentially fatal condition where a subsequent baby develops in the Fallopian tube. Also, scarring can cause infertility when a fertilized egg can have trouble implanting.  Damage to the cervix, the opening to the womb, can cause miscarriages, premature births, and stillbirths.  The cervix is meant to open slowly during hours of labor, not wrenched open in seconds by the abortionist.   See studies here.

Also, there are no less than 58 studies showing a link between abortion and breast cancer. This is because the breasts begin to change in the first days of pregnancy to get ready to produce milk, but don’t finish changing until the third trimester. Aborting before then puts them in an intermediate state, more susceptible, some researchers say, to cancer.

When asked about this, most pro-abortion groups point to a statement by the American Cancer Society claiming there is no link. However, the ACS denied a link between smoking and lung cancer for over three decades, even after multiple studies were released showing it. American Cancer Society officials are political appointees. The ACS only acknowledged the smoking/cancer link when the Surgeon General of the US ordered them to.

Finally before you go to the abortion clinic, read about what other women’s experiences with abortion were like. Silent No More collects the testimonies of women who had abortions. It has over 2000 stories. if you read what these women are saying, you may get an idea of what abortion is like. Also, if you do have an abortion, Silent No More can tell you where support groups and other resources for post-abortion women can be found. Read what other women are saying.

Below is a picture of anesthesia being injected after dilation of the cervix. This is the first stage of an abortion at 10 weeks. The woman’s legs are blurred out.

Before you make your final choice I want to leave you with these words from a woman who had an abortion. When asked what she would say to other women considering it, she said:

Never killed the child. It will haunt you the rest of your life… Recognize that, if you have the abortion, you’re not only killing your child, you are killing someone’s brother/sister, someone’s cousin, someone’s friend, someone’s grandchild, someone’s mother, someone’s father, someone’s neighbor. Realize that abortion is killing children…”

Hopefully you now know what it means to have an abortion at 9 weeks. An abortion at 9 weeks kills a child and scars a mother forever. Whether you are having an abortion at 9 weeks or at 24 weeks, an abortion at one week or an abortion at 9 weeks, a baby is killed. Any abortion at 9 weeks will leave lasting emotional scars.

The crisis pregnancy centers. can’t stop you from having an abortion, no one can, abortion is legal. But they can give you information about abortion’s risks and alternatives you may get at the clinic.

It was unusual at all for me to take 10,000 to 15,000 a day to the bank – in cash. It’s a lie when they tell you they’re doing it to help women because they’re not. They’re doing it for the money.”

There are MANY more quotes like this here.

Clinics can only stay open if they make money. They even charge for pregnancy tests, often many times more than you would pay buying one at the supermarket. (and its the same test) They don’t make any money if you walk out and have the baby. But crisis pregnancy centers have no financial stake in your decision. They will give you information that the clinic won’t, because they are afraid of losing your business.

I will give you the numbers and contact info for the pregnancy centers if you scroll down.

But first please look at some of the pictures of what will happen to your baby 8 weeks if she or he is aborted.

At 8 weeks you may be thinking of taking the abortion pill. You may not know this but abortions by pill are FAR more dangerous than those done by surgery. 5 women have died in the United States over the past few years from massive infections after taking  the pills.

You can read about abortion pills risks here.

Other women have horrible, nightmarish experiences with agonizing cramps and super heavy bleeding. Read a former Planned Parenthood director’s experience here, or this one from the magazine Marie Claire.

If you have taken the abortion pill but now regret it it may not be too late to save your baby . Go here immediately  or call 1 877  558 0333

From Jewels Green, who I mentioned before.

Read Jewel’s Green’s testimony here.

And now the crisis pregnancy centers:

Birthright is another excellent organization that helps women considering abortion. They have centers mostly in English speaking countries. They are not affiliated with any religion. I called them once. When I told them I was pro-life, they made a point to tell me they were “not political” They will not try to sway your decision. They have a 24 hour hotline. Please call them at 1-800 550 4900

And here is an international directory of pregnancy help.

If you have had an abortion and need support, here are some links for you to try.

There are other options for you than abortion. What about adoption? A lot of women feel they can’t “give away” their baby. But adoption is not the same as it used to be.

Although women very rarely die of abortions in the first trimester, there are other risks. Having an abortion can create scar tissue on the uterus which can cause tubal pregnancy, a potentially fatal condition where a subsequent baby develops in the Fallopian tube. Also, scarring can cause infertility.  Damage to the cervix, the opening to the womb, (the cervix is meant to open slowly during hours of labor, not wrenched open in seconds by the abortionist) can cause miscarriages, premature births, and stillbirths when it gives away in a future pregnancy.

Before you go to the abortion clinic, read about what other women’s experiences with abortion were like.

There is another thing you may not realize. Do you have other children? My friend Susi runs a ministry for the siblings of aborted babies. She started it in honor of her little brother, who was aborted. Often when a child (or even an adult child) finds out that their mother had an abortion, it brings up feelings of sadness, grief, survivors’ guilt, and shock. You may say you will never tell your children, but secrets have a way of coming out in families, and kids are very good at figuring things out. My friend talks to siblings all over the world who mourn the brothers and sisters they never had. Please go here to read amessage she wrote to abortion minded women.

Below: Anesthesia being injected into woman’s cervix before a suction abortion. The woman’s legs have been blurred out. See the rest of this procedure.

If you have had an abortion and need support, here are some links for you to try

Before you make your final choice I want to leave you with these words from a woman who had an abortion. When asked what she would say to other women considering it, she said:

Never kill the child.

Abortion at 7 Weeks Pictures

This page shows pictures of abortion at 7 weeks. First, here are some pictures of living unborn babies at 7 weeks:

Before you look at the pictures of abortion at 7 weeks, I want to share something with you. If you are woman considering abortion, and you came to this page wanting to find out more, I want to talk to you from the heart and share some information about abortion at 7 weeks that you might not know.  If you are not a woman seeking an abortion, and/or don’t want to read my message just scroll down to see the pictures.

First I want to tell you a little more about your baby. I’m getting this info from the site Endowment for Human Development, a scientific website affiliated with National Geographic. It has no ties to the prolife movement.

The baby inside you has had a beating heart for 4 weeks now. He or she has brain that is giving off waves.   Your baby responds to touch and will have a startle reaction when he or she is touched with something.  The baby will pull away and react when the abortion instruments come at her. Some scientists believe she can feel the pain of being ripped apart. She can have the hiccups.  The stomach produces digestive juices and the kidneys have begun to function. 40 muscle sets begin to operate in conjunction with the nervous system. If she is a girl she has ovaries of her own. With fingers and toes, she is a unique individual who has never existed before in all of history and will never exist again.

Jewels Green worked in an abortion clinic. Her clinic only provided 1st trimester abortions. She held women’s hands, watched women cry as they had their abortions. And in the backroom, she handled the broken pieces of the babies, holding the aborted babies’ feet up to a little chart to verify how far along the pregnancies were for the clinic’s paperwork. Even in the 1st trimester, many of the babies were fully  formed, like the pictures you just saw.

If you are planning on having an abortion at 7 weeks by pill, the abortion pill causes the lining of the uterus to break up, preventing the baby from receiving oxygen and nutrients so that she suffocates and starves. After the baby dies, she is passed out of your body. This is how an abortion at 7 weeks is performed by pill.   Go here for some more information about the abortion pill, its risks, and personal testimonies of people who did it.

Some women who take the abortion pill have horrible experiences with agonizing cramps and super heavy bleeding. Read a former Planned Parenthood director’s experience here, or this one from the magazine Marie Claire.

Please also know that abortion can cause a lot of heartache to you, the mother. Two large studies in Finland that looked at medical records found that the suicide rate for women who abort is 6-7 times that of women who don’t. For teenagers, another study found a 10x higher suicide rate.  Another study found that women who abort have a higher rate of seeking psychiatric treatment both inpatient and outpatient. Other studies show higher rates of substance abuse for post-abortion women.  Here are some of these studies.

Have some studies found that women who abort do not suffer any negative feelings afterwards? yes. But the studies that show this have several serious methodological flaws. For one thing, they usually interview the women one time in the abortion clinic and then again a few weeks later. They don’t follow the women for very long. It often takes a little while for negative feelings to surface, which is why studies that follow women longer always find more negative effects.

Also, these studies have a very high attrition rate. In one, 30% of women dropped out between the first and second questionnaire. No effort was made to follow up with these women or find out why they did not want to talk about their abortions.

Although women very rarely die of abortions in the first trimester, there are other risks. Having an abortion can create scar tissue on the uterus which can cause tubal pregnancy, a potentially fatal condition where a subsequent baby develops in the Fallopian tube. This is because the breasts begin to change in the first days of pregnancy to get ready to produce milk, but don’t finish changing until the third trimester. Aborting before then puts them in an intermediate state, more susceptible, some researchers say, to cancer. This is still very controversial, as some studies contradict this. But there is enough evidence to make this something to consider.

“The OBGYN told me I was not physically able to carry a child…”

In 1970 when I was 16 years old, I became pregnant. The doctor who told me I was pregnant said he didn’t do abortions but gave me the number of a doctor that did. I was appalled that he would refer me to an abortionist. I finally found the nerve to tell my mother. She asked me if I wanted a baby. I was hysterical. I told her I was too young to be a mother. My mother told me they had a new medical procedure where they suction you out and you’re no longer pregnant. This was the answer. My mom’s OBGYN examined me, sent me to a psychiatrist and scheduled a D & C. The OBGYN told me I was not physically able to carry a child. The psychiatrist said I was not emotionally ready. My mother never said another word. My boyfriend sold his motorcycle to pay for my medical procedure. I was ready for this to be done.

I checked into the hospital. I was in a ward with about six other women. The nurse came in and said to me you’re too young to be pregnant. Somebody in the ward used the word abortion and I just about fainted. I couldn’t believe I was going to have an abortion. I was there to get a medical procedure.

I laid in my bed and I prayed to God. I asked him to give me a sign if I was doing the wrong thing. I asked him to start a fire or something drastic. I asked him to make the doctor not show up. I wanted to change my mind. I wanted out but I was afraid to inconvenience the doctor. My boyfriend had sold his motorcycle. I was afraid I’d disappoint everyone. The next morning they woke me up, gave me an IV to put me out and killed my baby. I went home and became depressed. I didn’t want to go back to school. I finished the last month of 11th grade and never went back.

I finished high school at adult education. I felt my childhood was gone. I have had horrible unexplained depression. I am currently on 2 medications to prevent depression. I have had 3 wonderful children by the father of my aborted baby. But when I look at my family this is what I see . . . There will always be a space between me and [my oldest living child] because that is where my oldest child should be. I can never shake the horror of it all. I now work at a Crisis Pregnancy Center to try and help just one teenager or young woman who needs a hand.

Finally before you go to the abortion clinic, read about what other women’s experiences with abortion were like. Silent No More collects the testimonies of women who had abortions. It has over 2000 stories. if you read what these women are saying, you may get an idea of what abortion is like. Also, if you do have an abortion, Silent No More can tell you where support groups and other resources for post-abortion women can be found.Read what other women are saying.

At 6 weeks you may be thinking of taking the abortion pill.

And if you just want someone to talk to, feel free to email me sarah5775@gmail.com

Before you make your final choice I want to leave you with these words from a woman who had an abortion. When asked what she would say to other women considering it, she said:

Never kill the child.

Teen Abortion Risks Fact Sheet

Abortion clinics’ youngest patients are more at risk for abortion-related health problems than their older counterparts. Here is a factsheet on teens and abortion complications.

Teen Abortion Risks: A Factsheet

“Parents are faced with a shell of a person and have no idea where they lost their child.”
— Terri, who had a secret abortion as a teen

Suicide attempts — 6 times more likely

— Teenagers are 6 times more likely to attempt suicide if they have had an abortion in the last six months than are teens who have not had an abortion.(1)

— Teens who abort are up to 4 times more likely to commit suicide than adults who abort,(2) and a history of abortion is likely to be associated with adolescent suicidal thinking.(3)

— Overall suicide rates are 6-7 times higher among women who abort.(4)

— Teens who abort are more likely to develop psychological problems,(5) and are nearly three times more likely to be admitted to mental health hospitals than teens in general.(6)

— About 40% of teen abortions take place with no parental involvement,(7) leaving parents in the dark about subsequent emotional or physical problems.

— Teens risk further injury or death because they are unlikely to inform parents of any physical complications.

Some examples of teens who died from complications or suicide after they had abortions without telling their parents: (8)

Holly Patterson, California, died at age 18
Erica Richardson, Maryland, died at age 16
Dawn Ravanell, New York, died at age 13
Tamia Russell, Detroit, died at age 15
Sandra Kaiser, St. Louis, died at age 14 of suicide

Sandra died 3 weeks after her half-sister took her for an abortion without telling Sandra’s mother, who could have warned doctors about Sandra’s history of psychological problems that put her at risk for more problems after abortion.(9)

— Teens are 5 times more likely to seek subsequent help for psychological and emotional problems compared to their peers who carry “unwanted pregnancies” to term.(10)

— Teens are 3 times more likely to report subsequent trouble sleeping, and nine times more likely to report subsequent marijuana use after abortion.(10)

— Among studies comparing abortion vs. carrying to term, worse outcomes are associated with abortion, even when the pregnancy is unplanned.(10)

— 65% higher risk of clinical depression among women who abort.(11)

— 65% experienced multiple symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among women who abort.(12)

— 64% of women who had undergone an abortion reported that they felt pressured by others to abort.(12)

Acute Pain. Infertility. Risk of Death. — Pain

Teens report more severe pain during the abortion procedure vs. adult women. One study of pain during 1st trimester abortions found severe acute pain comparable to childbirth or cancer. Pain scores were significantly higher for teens.(13)

— Lacerations up to twice as likely

Teens are up to twice as likely to experience dangerous cervical lacerations during abortion compared to older women, probably because they have smaller cervixes which are more difficult to dilate or grasp with instruments.(14)

— Infertility and life-threatening complications

Teens are at higher risk for post-abortion infections such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and endometritis because their bodies are more susceptible to infection and they are less likely than older women to follow instructions for medical care.(15) These infections increase their risk of infertility, hysterectomy, ectopic pregnancy, and other serious complications.(16)

— Breast cancer risk 30-50% higher

An early full-term birth reduces breast cancer risk by as much as 1/3, while abortion of a first pregnancy carries a 30-to 50% increased risk of breast cancer.(17) More than 90% of those who abort at 17 or younger have not had a previous full-term pregnancy, compared to 78% of patients age 18-19 and 49% of abortion patients overall.(18)

Teens are more likely to abort because of pressure from their parents or partner(19)

Teens more likely to report being misinformed in pre-abortion counseling(20)

Teens more likely to have riskier late-term abortions According to the CDC, approximately 30% of abortions among teens take place at 13 weeks gestation or greater, compared to only 12% among women in general.(21)

Late-term abortions are associated with …

— More severe psychological complications

This is often because the woman wants to continue the pregnancy but ends up aborting because of pressure from others or her circumstances.(22) Women who have 2nd-trimester abortions are more likely to express ambivalence, regret, moral or religious objections, and to have a more favorable attitude toward the unborn child than women having 1sttrimester abortions.(23)

— Higher risk of serious physical complications

Teens who abort in the 2nd and 3rd trimester face a greater risk of physical complications, including endometritis, intrauterine adhesions, PID, subsequent miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies, ruptured uterus, and death.(24)

— Trouble with later pregnancies for mother and baby D&E abortions, frequently used in the second trimester, are associated with low birth weight in later pregnancies, which can lead to health and developmental problems for the baby, including cerebral palsy.(25)

Grief, trauma and self-destructive outcomes

— Teens who abort are twice as likely as their peers to abuse alcohol, marijuana, or cocaine.(26)

— Teens have greater difficulty coping after abortion,(27) leading to problems such as suicide, psychological problems, substance abuse, and difficulty in relationships

— Negative effects on relationships and parenting. Teens who report “being particularly fond of children” do not do as well psychologically after an abortion.(28) Teenagers who have abortions often have problems regarding sexuality and parenting later in life.(29)

A lonely, traumatic experience. The abortion procedure itself is considered by many teenagers to be stressful and associated with feelings of guilt, depression, and a sense of isolation.(30)

A nightmare that doesn’t end. Teens are more likely to report severe nightmares and to score higher on scales measuring antisocial traits, paranoia, drug abuse, and psychotic delusions than are older abortion patients.(31)

Four times higher risk of repeat abortion. Teens who abort are likely to become pregnant again within the next few years.(32) Among pregnant teens, those who had had an abortion were at least 4 times more likely to abort.(33) For additional information on post-abortion research and links to published studies, visit www.afterabortion.org.

Abortion’s Harm to Women: Recent Research

A number of studies have been done recently that document abortion’s harm to women. This is a collection of them.

Recent Research: Abortion’s Harm to Women

62% Higher Risk of Death from All Causes, 2.5 Times Higher Risk of Suicide

Compared to women who give birth, women who abort have an elevated risk of death from all causes, which persists for at least eight years. Higher risk of death from suicide and accidents were most prominent. Projected on the national population, this effect may contribute to 2,000 – 5,000 more deaths among women each year.(1) Southern Medical Journal, 2002

3.5 Times Higher Death Rates from Suicide, Accidents, Homicides (Suicide 6 Times Higher)

Researchers examining deaths among the entire population of women in Finland found that those who had abortions had a 3.5 times higher death rate from suicide, accidents, or homicides in the following year. Suicide rates among aborting women were six times higher compared to women who gave birth and two times higher compared to women who miscarried.(2) European Journal of Public Health, 2005

Abortion Deaths Underreported on Death Certificates

A study of medical records in Finland found that 94 % of maternal deaths associated with abortion are not identifiable from death certificates alone. The researchers found that linking death certificates to medical records showed that the death rate associated with abortion is three times higher than that associated with childbirth.(3) Paediatric Perinatal Epidemiology, 2004

65% Suffered Trauma, 31% Had Health Complications

In this study comparing American and Russian women who had experienced abortion, 65% of American women studied experienced multiple symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which they attributed to their abortions. Slightly over 14% reported all the symptoms necessary for a clinical diagnosis of abortion induced PTSD, and 84% said they did not receive adequate counseling.(4) 31% had health complications afterward. Medical Science Monitor, 2004

64% Involve Coercion, 84% Not Fully Informed

In the above study comparing American and Russian women who had experienced abortion, 64% of American women reported that they felt pressured by others to abort.5 84% said they did not receive adequate counseling.(4) Medical Science Monitor, 2004

Higher Rates of Depression, Substance Abuse, Suicidal Behavior After Abortion

In a New Zealand study, women who had abortions subsequently experienced higher rates of substance abuse, anxiety disorders, and suicidal behavior than women who had not had abortions, even after controlling for pre-existing conditions. Approximately 42% of women with a history of abortion had experienced major depression in the last four years (nearly double the rate of women who had not been pregnant and 35% higher than those who carried to term).(6) Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2006 Significantly Higher Risk of Clinical Depression

Compared to women who carry their first unintended pregnancies to term, women who abort their first pregnancies are at significantly higher risk of clinical depression as measured an average of eight years after their first pregnancies.(7) British Medical Journal, 2002

65% Higher Risk of Clinical Depression

Analysis of a federally funded longitudinal study of American women revealed that women who aborted were 65% more likely to be at risk of long-term clinical depression after controlling for age, race, education, marital status, history of divorce, income, and prior psychiatric state.(8) Medical Science Monitor, 2003

30% Higher Risk of Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Researchers compared women who had no prior history of anxiety and who had experienced a first, unintended pregnancy. Women who aborted were 30% more likely to subsequently report all the symptoms associated with a diagnosis for generalized anxiety disorder, compared to women who carried to term.(9)Journal of Anxiety Disorders, 2005

Five Times Higher Risk of Substance Abuse

Women who abort are five times more likely to report subsequent drug or alcohol abuse than women who deliver.(10) American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, 2000 Unintended First Pregnancies: Increased Substance Abuse if Women Abort

Among women who had unintended first pregnancies, those who had abortions were more likely to report, an average of four years later, more frequent and recent use of alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine than women who gave birth. This is the first study to compare substance abuse rates among women who had unintended pregnancies.(11) American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, 2004

Nearly Twice as Likely to Be Treated for Sleep Disorders, Which Are Often Trauma-Related

In a record based study of nearly 57,000 women with no known history of sleep disorders, women were more likely to be treated for sleep disorders after having an abortion compared to giving birth. Aborting women were nearly twice as likely to be treated for sleep disorders in the first 180 days after the pregnancy ended compared to delivering women. Numerous studies have shown that trauma victims will often experience sleep difficulties.(12) Sleep, 2006

Records-Based Study Indicates More Outpatient Psychiatric Care

Analysis of California Medicaid records shows that women who have abortions subsequently require significantly more treatments for psychiatric illness through outpatient care.(13) American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, 2002

160% More Likely to be Hospitalized for Psychiatric Treatment

A review of the medical records of 56,741 California Medicaid patients revealed that women who had abortions were 160% more likely than delivering women to be hospitalized for psychiatric treatment in the first 90 days following abortion or delivery. Psychiatric treatment rates remained significantly higher for at least four years.(14) Canadian Medical Association Journal, 2003

Screening for Known Risk Factors Would Dramatically Reduce Abortions

This study is an analysis of 63 medical studies that identify risk factors that predict negative psychological reactions to abortion. The review concludes that the number of women suffering from negative emotional reactions to abortion could be dramatically reduced if abortion clinics screened women for these risk factors.(15) The Journal of Contemporary Health Law and Policy, 2004

Subsequent Children Are Negatively Affected

The children of women who had abortions have less supportive home environments and more behavioral problems than children of women without a history of abortion. This finding supports the view that abortion may negatively affect bonding with subsequent children, disturb mothering skills, and otherwise impact a woman’s psychological stability.(16) Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2002

Drug Abuse During Subsequent Pregnancies Five Times More Likely

Among women delivering their first pregnancy, women with a history of abortion are five times more likely to use illicit drugs and two times more likely to use alcohol during their pregnancies. This substance use places their unborn children at risk of birth defects, low birth weight, and death.(17) American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dec. 2002

Increased Smoking and Drug Abuse During Subsequent Pregnancies

A study of women who had just given birth found that compared to women who had experienced other types of pregnancy loss or had never had an abortion, women who had previously had an abortion are more likely to smoke, drink alcohol, or use marijuana, cocaine, or other illegal drugs during pregnancy.(18) British Journal of Health Psychology, 2005

95% Want To Be Fully Informed of All Statistically Associated Risks

Women considering elective surgery, such as abortion, consider all information about physical or psychological risks to be very relevant to their decisions. Fully 95 percent of patients wished to be informed of all risks statistically associated with a procedure, even if the causal connection between the procedure and risk has not been fully proven. (This finding is especially relevant to abortion providers who assert that, without proof that abortion directly causes problems such as depression or breast cancer, women would prefer not to be given such “worrisome” and “unnecessary” information.)(19) Journal of Medical Ethics, 2006

Teens Have More Mental Health Problems After Abortion, Even With Unplanned Pregnancies

A nationally representative study found that adolescent girls who abort unintended pregnancies are five times more likely to seek subsequent help for psychological and emotional problems compared to their peers who carry unintended pregnancies to term, after controlling for previous mental health history, family situations and other factors that might influence mental health. Teens who aborted were also three times more likely to report having trouble sleeping and nine times more likely to report subsequent marijuana use. (20) Journal of Youth & Adolescence, 2006

Abortion Increases Risk of Later Miscarriage by 60%

Researchers in the U.K. surveyed women ages 18 to 55 about their reproductive histories, lifestyles and relationships and found that women who had a previous abortion had a 60 percent higher risk of miscarriage during a subsequent pregnancy.(21) BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2006

Abortion Provider: Luis Barquet

Barquet was an illegal abortionist who simply began to practice legally after Roe Vs. Wade. It is unknown how many women he killed before Roe.

He was an abortionist in Cuba before fleeing to Miami in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s. He was arrested for illegal abortion in Miami in 1961. In 1962 a study by the International Association of Chiefs of Police called him “a butcher;”, and noted that he “made a fortune” performing illegal abortions ” in back rooms and motels.” Barquet was ordered to leave the U.S. in 1963 but returned days later. He was indicted for bribery in New York in 1965 but remained a fugitive until his 1966 arrest in Florida.

Barquet successfully challenged Florida’s abortion laws in 1972 and set up a legal abortion clinic. He was arrested in 1976 on grounds that his abortion facility constituted a public nuisance. Barquet’s son reopened the facility, retaining Dr. Eduardo F. Elias, while Barquet was in jail.

Marina DeChapell died following pulmonary arrest during an abortion by Elias at Barquet’s clinic. The facility allegedly lacked emergency equipment. Barquet was serving a one-year sentence for an unspecified crime at the time of the death.
