Clinic Worker Discusses How Abortions “Provoke Emotion”

Clinic worker Sallie Tisdale discusses  of dealing with work at an abortion clinic in this article from Harper’s Magazine:

“Privately, even grudgingly, my colleagues might admit the power of abortion to provoke emotion… Its uncertainty lies in specific cases: retarded women and girls too young to give consent for surgery, women who are ill or hostile or psychotic. Such common dilemmas are met with both compassion and impatience: they slow things down.”

Sallie Tisdale “We Do Abortions Here” Harpers, October 1987

Other clinic workers are troubled by the nature of the abortion act itself. this abortionist felt conflicted when she was pregnant he did an abortion, and felt her baby kick at the moment she was tearing a leg off the fetus.

This abortionist feels troubled when he sees the picture of the baby he is about to abort on the ultrasound screen.

Pro-Choice Author on the Reasons Women Have Abortions

From pro-choice author Patricia Lunneborg:

“If it is a second, third, or fourth abortion, the reason “I don’t want a baby at the moment” is no less valid. If you are not comfortable with the idea of multiple abortions, the old adage of walking in someone else’s shoes comes to mind.”

Patricia Lunneborg Abortion: A Positive Decision (Westport, Connecticut: Bergin & Garvey, 1992) quoted in Tamara L Roleff. Abortion: Opposing Viewpoints (San Diego, Greenhaven Press, 1997) 106

Over 40% of all abortions are performed on women who already had a previous abortion. For more information on repeat abortions, go here.

ACLU Admits That Birth Does Not Magically Change What a Baby Is

In a brief submitted by the American Civil Liberties Union, where the ACLU argued in favor of doctors who wanted to remove the organs of an infant with anencephaly while the child was still alive:

“there is absolutely no morally significant change in the fetus between the moments immediately preceding and following birth.”

Quoted in Paul Greenberg, “the Power of a Cartoon,” National Right to Life News, December 13, 1994: 18

This is, of course, would pro-lifers have been arguing all along.

Naomi Wolf: Abortionists “Heroically” Cause Blood to Flow

Pro-choice author Naomi Wolf, who readily admits that abortion takes a life, discusses how abortionists have “blood on their hands.” She says:

This is the blood that the doctors and clinic workers often see clearly, and that they heroically rinse and cause to flow and rinse again. And they take all of our sins, the pro-choice as well as the pro-life among us, upon themselves.”

4 1/2 Pound Chinese Baby Born Alive After an Abortion, Then Killed

In a 1995 article in Reader’s Digest, a young Chinese doctor describes her experience with a child aborted eight months into pregnancy. The baby was born alive, and:

“As the obstetrician in charge, I had the duty of ensuring that there were no abortion survivors. This meant an injection of 20 mL of iodine or alcohol into the soft spot of the infant’s head. It brings death within minutes.… Next to a garbage pail with the words “Dead Infants” scrawled on the lid was a black plastic garbage bag. It was moving, and cries were coming from the inside…

I had imagined a premature newborn, hovering between life and death. Instead, I found a perfect 4 1/2 pound baby boy, flailing his tiny fists and kicking his feet. His lips were purple from lack of oxygen.

Gently, I cradled his head in one hand and place the fingertips of the other on the soft spot. The skin there felt wonderfully warm, and it pulsed each time he wailed. My heart leapt. This is a life, a person, I thought.”

The doctor tried to save the baby boy, but another staff member later killed him.

Yin Wong, “a Question of Duty,” Reader’s Digest, September 1995: 65 – 70

One might think that such atrocities only take place in countries like China. However, babies are still aborted at this age in America, and many times they are in fact born alive. For some information about babies born alive after abortions in the USA, go here.

This story was taken from the book by James F Bohan. The House of Atreus: Abortion Is a Human Rights Issue (Westport, Connecticut: Praeger Publishers, 1999). (pgs 172-173)The author goes on to say:

“The Chinese doctor’s experience shows the powerful emotional impact of actually seeing the unborn. As an obstetrician, she knew what a child should look like At eight months after conception. But she did not decide to save the child when she heard how old it was, or even when she heard a cry. It was only when she actually saw and felt the child that she realized she could not kill it.”

Perhaps this explains why seeing the baby on the ultrasound screen is such a powerful experience both for women considering abortion and for abortion providers. Many women have changed their minds about abortions they wanted to have after seeing their child moving and kicking on the ultrasound screen. In addition, there’ve been a number of former abortionist and clinic workers who were converted when they saw a picture of the baby on the ultrasound screen during an abortion. Two of these are Abby Johnson and Joan Appleton.

Husband Pressures Wife to Abort Because the Baby Is a Girl

When pro-lifers proposed a law protecting unborn baby girls from being aborted solely because they were girls, pro-choice groups fell all over themselves saying that this never happens. They claimed that sex selection abortions were a myth. However, a number of abortionists and clinic workers have come forward saying they encountered people who aborted for just this reason. In one  study, the following quote appeared :

“I was devastated upon learning my second child was another girl during the ultrasound. The family name dies with my husband. He told me that I was useless. He did not want this child and I was to get an abortion. He left us when I refused, taking all our money and the car.”

– Anita

Chaille O’Neal “Never forgotten: The lasting impact of birth trauma” International Journal of Childbirth Education March 1, 2001

Abortions because of the gender of the child are by definition late-term abortions because an ultrasound can only see the gender of the child in the second trimester.

Study Shows That Abortion Is Not the Answer When a Baby Has Down Syndrome

An MSNBC article describes how people with down syndrome often lead happy lives, and that their families appreciate them,

“Among 2,044 parents or guardians surveyed, 79 percent reported their outlook on life was more positive because of their child with Down syndrome.”

“Skotko also found that among siblings ages 12 and older, 97 percent expressed feelings of pride about their brother or sister with Down syndrome and 88 percent were convinced they were better people because of their sibling with Down syndrome. A third study evaluating how adults with Down syndrome felt about themselves reports 99 percent responded they were happy with their lives, 97 percent liked who they are, and 96 percent liked how they looked.”

“Dr. Brian Skotko, a clinical fellow in genetics at Children’s Hospital Boston and lead study author, says he hopes the research on more than 3,000 Down syndrome patients and family members published in the October edition of the American Journal of Medical Genetics, will serve to better inform expectant parents and clinicians providing prenatal care.”

Kimbery Hayes Taylor “Down syndrome’s rewards touted as new test looms: Families report happy lives in first survey of impact of genetic condition” MSNBC NEWS 9/29/2011

80 to 90% of down syndrome children are aborted when the mother realizes that she is carrying a “defective” child.

Abortionist – Abortion Is Not a Good Answer

“Abortion is not a good solution. It would be better if we didn’t have it. But it would be even better if we didn’t need it.”

Dr. Richard Leigh, who performed almost 12,000 abortions in his career.

On another occasion:

“Never, never has anybody heard me say abortion is a good answer.“

This doctor died in 2011.

Chuck Haga “GF doctor who pioneered abortion services dies” Grand Folks Herald August 5, 2011

If even those who perform abortions, and are, at least allegedly, the biggest champions of legal abortion, admit that it’s a bad solution to a problem, perhaps it is time for for we, as a society, to work on ending abortion and establishing better options for women.

Pro-Choice Activist: “Abortion Stops a Beating Heart…”

Pro-Choice activist Anne Fuderi has written a number of articles supporting legalized abortion. However, she says:

“I accept that abortion stops a beating heart and I accept that abortion ends a potential human life, even in the very earliest weeks of pregnancy.”

Anne Fuderi “Abortion: How Late Is Too Late?” Spiked November 28, 2011

Does abortion and only a “potential” life? These medical textbooks and scientists claim that life begins at conception, which means that an actual life and not a potential life is what is ended in an abortion.

A number of abortionists have also admitted that the abortions they perform take human lives.

Marriage Counselor Discusses Aftermath of Abortion for Couples

Dr. Forrest C Stevenson, certified marriage counselor of Brighton, Michigan:

“As a marriage counselor, I have too often shared with a couple in this sorrow. They love each other, but as they look at each other, I see the hurt in their eyes. I’ve heard a woman say, “Seven years ago my husband said I could not have this baby. “I’m still in school, I’m going to get my education first.” I did what he said and I had an abortion. I wonder what that baby would’ve been like. Would he have had curly hair like his daddy? Would he have been a happy baby? Would it have been a girl? Would it have been a boy? What could’ve happened?”

Too many times I’ve heard a young man say, “I demanded that my wife get an abortion, but I wish that she had not done what I said.” These people may love each other, but the hurt of the guilt that they share together has grown like a wall between them. It is so serious they can hardly build an adequate life. Their marriage is a nightmare because of shared guilt.”

John R Rice The Murder of the Helpless Unborn… Abortion (Murfreesboro, Tennessee: Sword of the Lord Publishers, 1971) 32

Although this is a very old reference, the emotional aftermath of abortion has not changed that much in the past few decades. You can read about men who regret their partners’ abortions here and women who regret their abortions.

Abortion still put a tremendous strain on couples’ relationships. One study showed that 80% of all relationships broke up in the aftermath of an abortion.
