Relationships Break up After Women are Coerced into Abortions

Often women have abortions at the urging of their partners. Tragically, many of the relationships do not survive the pain and resentment this causes.

“Eunice”, telling up her abortion:

“When I was at the clinic waiting for the abortion, I kept hoping my husband would show up. I kept hoping he would come in and say, “Don’t do this! I changed my mind!”

She had her abortion, and the marriage broke up several months later

Kate:

“Nobody asked me, “Is this really what you want?… I was hoping and praying that someone, my husband, would come in and stop it from happening. But he was totally opposed to what I wanted to do. I felt like I was just being selfish, wanting the child; it was too much of a burden on his health.”

I asked how her husband’s health is now; she responds that he’s fine, but he isn’t her husband anymore. He left her a few years ago.”

Same book, p 63 to 64

The author, who interviewed these women and many others, made the following observation:

“When postabortion women talk about the reasons for their decision, they talk most often about the failure of the baby’s father to be supportive, to fill the father’s role. Unexpected pregnancy can raise some breathtaking problems, but a partner’s vigilant love has a way of easing them. Imagine a woman discovering a pregnancy in a difficult situation, but her partner saying to her, “I love you, I love our baby, I’ll do anything I can to make this family work.” On the other hand, imagine a story from one of my listening groups: a married woman with two kids, living in reasonable security, to whom her husband says, “Only ignorant people have more than two kids. I don’t want this baby. You have to have an abortion.” Which child will survive?”

In a study that appeared in International Review of Family Planning (Vincent M. Rue “Abortion in Relationship Context” International Review of Natural Family Planning Summer 1985 p 105) 70% of relationships ended within six months of a woman’s abortion

Teenager Forced to Abort Due to Lack of Support

A woman who had an abortion before due to lack of support from her mother and her boyfriend said the following:

“So it was back to the Manhattan abortion clinic. What else was I going to do? Who could I turn to? The minister who didn’t have the time of day for me? Somebody at my school? There’s nobody. So my mom takes me to the clinic. When it’s time for me to sign the form I whispered to the nurse, “I don’t want to have the abortion – my mother’s making me, she somewhere in the building, but please don’t make me have the abortion.” The nurse just said, “Look, there are people waiting. Do you want to do it or don’t you? Make a decision or get out.” The thoughts were flying through my head: where would I live? Who would pay the doctor? Who could I turn to?

I couldn’t think of any answers. So I said, “Okay. I’ll have the abortion.” And I did”

Many women have abortions due to lack of support from the people in their lives. Often, the male partner coerces them into it, other times, it is the parents when the woman is a teenager. Read more about coerced abortions here.

Woman Struggles after Her Abortion

A woman named Sally tells her story:

“It wasn’t a hard decision, but it was a horrible decision. I felt like I had to do it to survive; I thought my parents would never talk to me again if they found out I was pregnant. I even imagined grandparents in heaven hating me. I tried to involve the guy. I was wishing he would marry me, and I could see no other way to continue the pregnancy. But he was such a jerk. He took me to the clinic, but I paid the whole thing; afterwards he took me to his house and ignored me while I lay there in pain and bleeding. Instead, he went out and bought a kid’s racecar set, set it up on the living room rug, and invited his friends over to play!…

I can’t believe that I stood for that kind of disrespect….. At the clinic they were so cold; the doctor didn’t even tell me his name, but I thought, “This is what I deserve.” I just felt so boxed in, like I had no other choice. Every step I took, I took to function, to survive. So after that I shut down for 10 years, except for anniversary reactions… And I refused to hold a baby.”

10-week-old fetus

“Melinda” was not notified that the pathology report came back from her abortion showing no fetal remains. Before her scheduled follow-up appointment, she reported to an emergency room due to severe cramping pain. While in the hospital bathroom, she expelled a four-and-a-half inch fetus into the toilet. Woman Goes into Labor after Abortion, Delivers Part of Baby

One woman’s story:

14 week old fetus

“Teresa” had her abortion on September 1, 1989, at a National Abortion Federation member clinic. During the abortion, she was told that she was more than the 10 or 12 weeks pregnant that she had originally been diagnosed to be. Staff performed an ultrasound and declared the fetus to be 14 weeks. The abortionist demanded an additional $225, which Teresa didn’t have. The abortionist sent her home, bleeding. Later that day Teresa was admitted to a hospital, where labor was induced. She expelled a fetus missing its leg and intestines.

After Abortion, Woman Delivers Parts of her Baby

Christina Dunigan tells the following story:

16 week old fetus

“Patricia” underwent an abortion at the notorious Dadeland clinic in Miami on March 2, 1985. After she went home, she began to bleed and passed the upper portion of a fetus. “I freaked out,” Patricia told the Miami Herald, “I didn’t know what to do. I could see the eyes, and the arms and legs.” She put the macerated fetus in a plastic bag an took it back to Dadeland, where the clinic director told her it was “a blood clot.” Patricia took the fetus to a hospital where they confirmed that it was the remains of a 16-week fetus. Patricia was fortunate; another Dadeland patient, Ellen Williams, suffered fatal injuries the same day Patricia had her abortion.”

Woman Describes RU-486 Abortion

In an article in the Boston Phoenix, a woman describes an abortion at six weeks. She describes what it was like after taking RU-486, the abortion pill:

“Back at the dorm, hours later, I know that I writhed in my twin bed, suffering from debilitating, convulsing cramps. My roommates, best friend, and boyfriend hovered around; they brought me pain killers, Tiger Balm, hot-water bottles, and applesauce, and all the while they stroked my head and conferenced in the background about how I was doing. I bled profusely as my body rejected the fetus that had been described to me as “the size of a grain of rice.” I threw up. And finally, I fell asleep.”

Anonymous “I Had an Abortion” The Boston Phoenix Sept 24, 2008

Her six-week-old embryo may have been described as a “grain of rice”, but this is what he or she really looked like. At six weeks, the baby has a heartbeat and brain waves as well as the beginning of fingers and toes.

Teenager Coerced into Two Abortions

Christina Dunigan tells the story of a young woman who became pro-life after experiencing her own unplanned pregnancy and seeing her friend forced into abortions.

The author recounts the story of her friend Sherry:

“She had been fifteen years old and living with her mother when she’d gotten pregnant for the first time. She had been helping her mother run a day care center, and she figured if she was caring for all these strangers’ children, she could take care of her own baby, too. Sherri’s mother told her, “I have made an appointment for you at Planned Parenthood. I have $160 to pay for it. You’re getting in the car with me, and I can either take you to Planned Parenthood, or I’ll take you to the bus station and you can buy a one-way ticket to any place that $160 will take you.” Sherri got in the car and went to Planned Parenthood.

….within a few months Sherri was pregnant again. She begged her mother not to take her back to Planned Parenthood. So her mother made an appointment with a private OB/GYN. Sherri had her second unwanted abortion. She bided her time until she was 18, married her boyfriend, and moved out and got pregnant with a baby she could keep.”

So many times abortion is not truly the mother’s “choice.” Rather, they are coerced by their parents, partners, or situation to abort a baby they would rather have.
