Abortion mills described in New York Times

An article from The New York Times described abortion mills in New York City:

“It is a shadowy business, the unregulated world of abortion mills, shabby clinics operating behind the facades of doctors’ offices, often in poor neighborhoods. Its victims are women who know little about legal rights or medical options, who have seen an ad or heard a tip and come to this … to risk butchery on a table….No one knows how many such fly-by-night surgeries there are in New York City or how many abortions they produce. But law-enforcement officials and medical experts say dozens of these clinics are believed to be tucked away behind storefronts and in more ordinary-looking doctors’ offices and they are believed responsible for scores or even hundreds of illegal or incompetent abortions annually.”

The article refers to:

“chilling secrets of sleazy abortion mills — most of them run by licensed doctors who use their offices as abortion “clinics,” but are not licensed as full-fledged abortion clinics and are thus not subject to rigorous state standards and periodic inspections.”

After giving several examples of abortion malpractice, the Times points out that despite multiple botched abortions causing injuries, only one New York doctor lost his licence.

“Only one doctor in 1989 had a license summarily suspended for gross misconduct in an abortion….there have been only four other summary suspensions — emergency actions invoked before hearings on charges — related to abortions in the last six years — one in 1985, one in 1990 and two this year.

While the state regulates and inspects the legitimate clinics, it lacks the authority and staff to regulate and inspect doctors’ offices, and can only challenge a doctor’s license after a complaint and an investigation. And many clients, even if dissatisfied, are reluctant to file a complaint.”

ROBERT D. McFADDEN “Abortion Mills Thriving Behind Secrecy and Fear” New York Times November 24, 1991

This is a rare candid article from a newspaper that usually stays firmly pro-choice and, in future years, would argue against any kind of health regulations on abortion facilities.

Woman who aborted had to have part of colon removed

Elaine Blakely of Huntsville, Alabama, describes the “safe, legal” abortion she had in 1976:

I am a woman who was exploited by abortion ten years ago. My abortion was free, legal and by no means performed in a “back alley” facility. In fact, the abortion facility was recommended by Planned Parenthood. Since I was not working at the time, Planned Parenthood happily gave me a “free pass” for the abortion. I didn’t even have to pay for the abortion. . .

At the Kansas City abortion clinic, I was given a pelvic exam. . . Contrary to what I was told, the abortion hurt very much and it led to severe complications. The “doctor” who performed my abortion perforated my uterus, cut an artery, and traumatized my colon. The doctor left me alone there with the “counselors” and one “nurse” for one and a half hours. After all the other patients had left the abortion facility, I was rushed by ambulance to a hospital across the state line for observation and blood transfusions. The ambulance rushed me to the hospital with lights flashing and sirens blaring in an attempt to save my life. The complaint that back alley abortions kills girls must be seen in light of the fact that girls are dying today from LEGAL abortions.

In order to save my life, a few hours later a hysterectomy was performed at the Kansas City, Missouri, Hospital. I am telling you this because I am an adult. I was misled into believing it was a simple procedure with no complications. Since then I have had eighty percent of my colon removed.

Former abortion worker: We maimed 1 out of 500 women

Carol Everett, former owner of 2 abortion clinics and director of 4, now pro-life:

“The last 18 months I was involved in the abortion industry we maimed to the point of major surgery one woman out of every five hundred.  Let me define maimed.  Hysterectomy, colostomy because her uterus had been perforated (punctured), and her bowel closest hospital.  We never called an ambulance.  An ambulance is a terrible advertisement in front of an abortion clinic.”

Woman nearly dies after third abortion

One woman tells her story:

“The abortion clinic workers told me not to worry about it because they were just removing “a blob of tissue,” and I wouldn’t feel anything. However, the pain after the third abortion was excruciating, and I had to be rushed to the emergency room after the third day, because I was bleeding excessively and running a high fever.

The ER doctor told me that I might have a perforated uterus, and if that were the case, they would have to do a hysterectomy. I discovered later that my uterus had not been punctured, but that the abortion clinic had left some of the “fetal matter” (parts of the baby) and part of the placenta inside of me. Because of this, they had to do a D&C. I’m lucky to be alive today, for the doctor said if I had not come in when I did, I would’ve hemorrhage to death!”

Abortionist mistakes 26 week baby for 6 weeks

Pro-Life author Troy Clark, Ph.D. recounted the following story:

“Taranda,” age 17, went to a Family Planning Clinic for Reproductive Health for an abortion on December 22, 1989. Dr. Karen J Smiley misdiagnosed the pregnancy at 6 weeks and performed an abortion.

Four days later, Taranda gave birth to a one pound, critically ill infant girl in a hospital corridor. Taranda’s lawyer said, “She’s devastated, obviously. She would never have dreamed of having an abortion had she known it was 26 weeks old.” Taranda needed psychiatric care after her ordeal. The following news agencies reported her story:

Botched abortion of 7 month old baby puts teen in hospital

A pro-life book tells the story of a 16 year-old-woman who had a botched abortion.

“Francine,” age 16, went to the All Women’s Health Center for an abortion in August 1986. Abortionist Harold Ticton estimated the pregnancy at 3 months.

Upon removing the baby’s arm, he realized that the boy was actually 7 months. He stopped the procedure, but did not transport Francine to the hospital for 7 hours. Francine had the dead fetus removed by C-section, was admitted to the intensive care unit, and was hospitalized for over a week.

7  months, 28 weeks

An autopsy on the 28 week young baby attributed death to “partial dismemberment due to the suctioning during the abortion.” Tiction blamed Francine, saying that she gave him a wrong date for her last period, which led him to miscalculate the pregnancy as 12 weeks rather than 28 weeks. The following news agencies reported the story:

Third trimester baby bleeds to death after botched abortion

Pro-lifer Troy Clark, Ph.D, documented the following story

“Dorothy”, age 23, had an abortion at Family Planning Medical Clinic on October 30, 1987. The gestational age was misdiagnosed before the abortion was started. When trouble arose, she was transported to a hospital, where the gestational age was estimated to be 21 weeks. The abortion was completed.

An autopsy on the baby revealed a well-developed human being with no abnormalities other than injuries caused by abortion, including traumatic amputation of left arm at shoulder. The baby bled to death from the wound, with a lacerated area extending over 3 inches long and 2 inches wide. He had been 30 to 31 weeks of gestational age.”

Doctor sends botched abortion victim to hospital in car during rush hour

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has an article about a case where an abortionist nearly killed a woman. This was not the only operation Dr.  Scott R Barrett botched. He also killed at least one other woman:

“The degree of damage that Barrett caused to B.J. was almost unheard of. Barrett was utterly oblivious to the fact that he was suctioning B.J.’s abdominal organs out of her body. Then, having nearly eviscerated his patient and with her clearly in critical condition, he sent her to the hospital in a private car during rush hour. By the time she reached the operating table, she was moments away from bleeding to death. A more egregious example of incompetence and gross negligence is difficult to imagine.”

“An abortionist’s trial of tragedy records detail botched operations that; finally brought state action” St. Louis Post-Dispatch  08/02/92

Barrett was operating legally.

Abortion patient gets pelvic inflammatory disease and other problems

Randi, who had an abortion:

“It physically affected me a lot. I got really sick from it. I was looking for a job and I was run down during the summer and so I just felt really drained and exhausted by all that and then following that I got pelvic inflammatory disease and a bladder infection and a kidney infection that were all complicated by each other and laid me out for a couple of months. I had very severe cramps for a while…

I thought about it more selfishly. I thought about in terms of myself.”

OB/GYN comments on “surprising” number of legal abortion deaths

Shortly after abortions legalization, a prominent OB/GYN admitted that the death rate from legal abortion was high:

“The surprising number of maternal deaths and near deaths following legal abortion complications should alert all who do these operations that they are not to be undertaken without the same degree of preoperative evaluation and postoperative care rendered to other gynecologic procedures.”

Deaths and Near Deaths with Legal Abortions, MJ Bulfin, presented at the ACOG Convention, October 28, 1975
