60 Minutes On The National Abortion Federation and Clinic Safety

TheNational Abortion Federation claims that they

“ensure continued high standards for safe, quality abortion care. We meet this charge in three ways: offering continuing medical education to reproductive healthcare providers, chronicling abortion related complications, and establishing standards of care.”

The CBS news show 60 Minutes had a story about a Maryland abortion clinic that killed at least two women. 60 Minutes. asked Barbara Radford, Executive Director of The National Abortion Federation, if she knew of the problems in that facility:

She said NAF was aware of them, but decided to remain silent because “This is the last thing we need. We had hoped that it wouldn’t get national publicity because of the political nature of all this.”

“60  Minutes reported that they discovered other pro-choice activists who also knew about the problems at this clinic, but who remained silent out of fear that the bad publicity would prompt state legislators to start regulating clinics. The 60 Minutes reporter, Marilyn Viero, pointed out that even though these laws could make clinics safer, abortion advocates usually fight them. This was reaffirmed when she interviewed pro-choice state senator Mary Boergers who said: “there’s only so much of a willingness to try to push a group like the pro-choice movement to do what I think is the responsible thing to do because they then treat you as if you’re the enemy.”

National Abortion Federation Puts Saving Money Ahead of Safety

The National Abortion Federation is an organization of abortion providers that without guidelines as to how abortion should be safe. According to abortionist Dr. Warren Hern:

“the NAF “has never pursued a serious program of standards implementation and program evaluation. Following good standards costs money. And people don’t want to do that.”

He admits that NAF has never implemented a system to monitor whether its facilities are following standards.

Legalized abortion did not prevent many abortion deaths from happening. Read more about the era of illegal abortion here.

Abortionist Expresses Concerns about Abortion Safety in the Post-Roe Era

Dr. Albert Altchek who had done 5,000 abortions, on Roe Vs Wade in 1973 editorial:

“As one who was active in promoting [legal abortion] I was elated. However, in a short while an inner deep concern developed. The Court indicated that first-trimester abortion may be performed by any physician without any government restriction. This opinion was based on …. The Court’s finding that such abortion is safer than regular childbirth. The latter observation, based on a carefully controlled series of abortions performed in New York state, may not necessarily hold true if the floodgates of completely unsupervised abortion are suddenly opened nationwide. I predict that within one year our profession will sadly record a far greater morbidity and mortality rate than has been reported so far.”

Albert Altchek, M.D. F.A.C.O.G. “Editorial: Abortion Alert” Obstetrics and Gynecology Sept 1973

And, indeed, legalized abortion has ushered in a new era of complications in abortion deaths. Read about some of these deaths here.

Birmingham News: Health Officer Laments Clinic Situation

Abortion rights groups oppose  legislation that would require abortion clinics to be regularly inspected and to be licensed. In some states, veterinary clinics are regulated more strictly than abortion clinics and are more subject to inspection.

“Would we like to do it ( inspect abortion clinics) more frequently? Absolutely,But the nursing homes get more inspection because those are federally funded surveys. We have to figure out how to do the clinic inspections with state dollars.”

Don Williamson, Alabama state health officer

Legal Abortion Deaths After Roe

From the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology:

“There has been no major impact on the number of women dying from abortion in the US… After all, it really makes no difference whether a woman dies from legal or illegal abortion, she is dead nonetheless. I find no comfort in the fact that legal abortion is now the leading cause of abortion related maternal deaths in the US.”

Dr. Dennis Cavanaugh “Effect of Liberalized Abortion on Maternal Mortality Rates” American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (February 1978) 375

Many times, abortionists who operated illegally before Roe Vs Wade simply began operating legally after it, moving from the back alley to the “front alley.” There have been abortionists who killed women before Roe and then went on to kill women after Roe. Read about some of them in the “Providers Hall of Shame” section.

Alabama Bureau of Health Director on Closing Abortion Clinics

Rick Harris, Alabama Bureau of Health Provider Standards director, discusses the closure of abortion clinics in Alabama:

“This will make three clinics on probation and one that has lost its license. When four out of ten of the industry gets licensing action, that’s a high number. That’s a real high number. We’re doing a lot more enforcement of other facilities, too. You don’t hear about it very much, but it’s going on.”

The Associated Press, Health dept. wants probation for Birmingham abortion clinic, 11/17/2006

The national news very seldom covers the deaths of women from legal abortion or the closing of clinics due to filthy or dangerous conditions.

Abortionist Jane Hodgson on Doing Abortions

Planned Parenthood 79th annual conference where it bestowed its highest honor The Margaret Sanger award on Minnesota Abortionist Jane Hodgson.

At a staff meeting in 1990 Hodgson said:

“When I first started doing abortions, I took my boards in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and therefore I knew I was competent to do it. After I had done my first few hundred I realized how silly I had been. At this point, having done somewhere around 12,000 procedures, I’m beginning to think I am reasonably competent.”
