CPC counselor recalls story of a changed mind

Debbie Gillmore, New Life Pregnancy Center in Tempe, Ariz, says that a woman wanting an abortion went to her center.

The woman declined the center’s gift of a baby hat, saying, “No. I’m not so sure I want to go through with this,” Gillmore recalled.

Later, the woman saw her baby on an ultrasound:

“The ultrasound technician displayed on the monitor her unborn child, arms and legs moving. When the beating heart appeared on the monitor, the woman blurted out, “There it is,” Gillmore reported in a written account.

The technician gave the pregnant woman a model of an unborn baby about the developmental age of hers that she had just observed. Holding the fetal model, the woman looked at the face and paused before telling the technician, “Well, I guess I’d better start thinking about a name.”

Man is “devastated” when partner tells him she is having an abortion

A man named Randy tells his story:

“I was just devastated. I remember falling off my bed …and I couldn’t get up. I thought I’d lost my mind. At that point, I was totally destroyed. Everything I believed in – that good triumphs over evil – was destroyed. My baby was sentenced to be killed for no purpose and it made no sense to me. You have to understand… I know that I’m a father. And I know you’re going to take my child (whom I love, want, and would die for), tear it to pieces and throw it in the garbage. Now, you really don’t believe those things happen.”

Teen incest victim was not helped by her abortion

Kate, who was molested and raped by her father, became pregnant by him, decided to get an abortion. She was far advanced in her pregnancy when she went to the abortion facility:

“In fact no-one ever asked me the identity of my child’s father; nor did I want to tell them… I had been trained to believe that no-one would believe me…

I had given up alcohol and was taking extra milk and iron to nurture a baby I intended to abort!

September came, and at last I left home, having won a place at college to read theology and psychology… Still pregnant, I went to the students’ health center. There was no discussion of alternatives to abortion. The attitude was, “You’re at the start of your degree. You don’t want to spoil everything now.”…

At the BPAS clinic [British Pregnancy Advisory Service, a network of abortion clinics] I had what was euphemistically described as counseling. Two doctors pronounced that my mental health would be impaired if I continued with this pregnancy. There was no discussion about my circumstances or the father’s identity; it was simply assumed that because I was 18 and embarking on a three-year degree course, a child would get in the way.

My naïveté extended to ignorance of the abortion procedure. I thought I’d go into the clinic, have an anesthetic, wake up and walk out, free to get on with my life.

“You might feel mildly depressed afterwards,” I was told. They took no account of the fact that I was nearly 26 weeks gone, nearly at the legal limit. I think all abortion is traumatic, but I had no idea what would come my way. I was totally unprepared to discover that not only would I be awake, but it would take a long time and be extremely painful.

The staff at the clinic were also ambivalent towards me. It’s harder for them to administer a process which will destroy a 26 week unborn infant than a 10 week baby, because the gruesome result of their actions is far more evident…

Nothing was explained except that I was too many weeks pregnant for termination to be by a surgical procedure. The solution was a saline injection. It never occurred to me that I would go through labor and birth. I remember asking a doctor, “Will this hurt the child?”

He replied, “You mustn’t think about that. It’s not a child, it’s a fetus.”

Man whose girlfriend had an abortion can’t move on

The Guardian ran a letter from a 25-year-old man who spoke about his partners abortion:

“I was in a relationship with an amazing woman for two of the happiest years of my life. Then we had an unplanned pregnancy. We decided to have the child together; I have a good job and I could have supported us both, and we loved each other.

Then she decided she wasn’t ready for the whole situation, almost three months into the pregnancy…. Personally, I’m against the idea of abortion – I was raised as a strict Catholic – but I always conceded it was a woman’s prerogative. …I was against the abortion but I loved my girlfriend and supported her….

Three months after the operation, we broke up, and I haven’t been able to sustain a relationship since. It has been almost a year. I have no problems attracting women but I just can’t bring myself to start a new relationship. I’m starting to worry whether it’s something I just won’t be able to get over before it’s too late.”

Sibling of aborted baby speaks out

From the sibling of an aborted baby:

“As a child, I can remember feeling like someone was missing from my family. During my teen years, I pushed those thoughts away because it seemed not true or possible. Six years ago, when I learned my mom had an abortion four years before I was born, suddenly everything that didn’t make sense to me came into focus.”

New pro-lifer thought early abortion was “mass of tissue”

On the Priests for Life website, people post reactions to the graphic photos the site shows. One woman became pro-life after seeing photos of first trimester aborted babies. She says:

“I have always believed that an early abortion was just removing a mass of tissue. I realized after looking at this site I have been so wrong. Thank you for showing this to help people understand innocent children are being killed no matter how early the procedure is done. I will share this information with everyone I know. – Julie”

Sibling of aborted baby reveals her feelings after retreat

At a retreat for the siblings of aborted babies, one woman wrote:

“I thought about my siblings deeply for the first time… ever. It hit me that had any of them been born, I would not have been ‘the eldest’ but the second youngest. The more I thought about it, the more I felt a certain identity crisis.”

Man becomes pro-life after seeing “tissue sample”

Jim Caley decided to get involved in the pro-life movement after he saw the body of a preborn baby at the lab where he worked:

“Jim spoke of working in a lab where one day he was sent into a storage room to get a tissue sample and there saw a perfect baby in a jar of formaldehyde – another “tissue sample.” That event affected his heart and thinking to where he was drawn to oppose abortion more actively.”

it is not clear whether this baby was aborted or stillborn, but the child was being handled simply as another specimen, with no recognition of his or her humanity.

“Having an abortion seemed like being raped again”

Nicole went to her pastor for advice after being raped. She says that her pastor encouraged her to have an abortion with the words:

‘Let me put your mind at ease. Any decision prayerfully considered is OK in the eyes of the church. And in your case I think you should have an abortion.’

Looking back on her abortion, Nicole says:

“For me, having an abortion was like being raped again, only worse – because this time I had consented to the assault.”
