Woman suffers complications after abortion: baby born alive

Pro-life author George Grant told the following story about a woman named Bethany de Grassi who had a saline abortion and suffered complications. According to her, her baby was born alive.

First she explains why she had the abortion:

“I was living with a guy at the time,” she told me, “and I really thought we were in love. When I got pregnant, I was happy. I thought we’d just settle down, raise a family, and pursue the American dream. But he had other ideas. When I refused to get an abortion he just moved out. Boom. My whole world caved in. I didn’t know what to do. I was scared and confused.”

Grant says:

Bethany waited almost 3 months before she did anything at all. Finally, she went to a Planned Parenthood clinic. “They told me that they didn’t do the procedure I needed there in the clinic, so they referred me to one of their doctors that had a private practice on the side for late-term abortions. They gave me all kinds of literature with charts and tables and footnotes and all, telling me that the technique was perfectly safe.”

Later, when Bethany was filling out the liability release form, she had a change of heart. “The form had a long, long list of possible complications in tiny print and I started to get really nervous. But the nurse came in and sat by me, assuring me that everything was going to be okay. I believed her.”

She shouldn’t have. Clinic personnel are trained to calm their customers. Sometimes with smiles. Sometimes with lies. Anything, just to get the job done.

The baby was born “gasping”:

Bethany’s troubles began with the delivery. “The baby was gasping when it came out,” she recalled. “It was awful. I started screaming. The doctor was cursing. And the nurse didn’t seem to know what to do. It was a nightmare.”

The child expired quickly and the clinic personnel were able, after a few minutes of coaxing and consoling, to calm Bethany down. She went into recovery was released.

Bethany suffered complications:

2 days later, she suffered a series of seizures and lapsed into a coma. At the hospital, her doctors found that she had hypernatremia – salt poisoning. Her parents were notified and along 6 day struggle for her life ensued. Finally, the medical team at the hospital was able to restore Bethany’s electrolyte balance intravenously and she was roused from the coma. “I should’ve paid attention to my conscience,” she now says. “I knew better than to try to come up with some easy fix for my problems. There’s just no such thing.”

Planned Parenthood abortion leads to injuries, broken relationship

Pro-lifer George Grant tells the following story:

Jared McCormick took his girlfriend, Susie Glanze, to Planned Parenthood for a pregnancy test late last year. “She was really scared, and so was I,” he said. “I told her that we could go ahead and get married. We were planning on it anyway. We’d just have to move things up a little, is all. But she wanted me to finish up with school first. So, there we were. At Planned Parenthood.”

The test was positive and Susie made an appointment for an abortion the next Saturday “I really went berserk,” Jared said. “I was dead set against the abortion. I begged her to marry me and keep our baby. But she wouldn’t listen.”

The doctors performed a D&C. There was profuse bleeding, but since that is quite common with D&C abortions, the clinic personnel didn’t think anything of it.

That was a terrible mistake. An hour later, Susie was still hemorrhaging and had to be rushed to the nearest hospital emergency room. There she was given 2 units of blood and treated for severe lacerations of the cervix and uterus. It would be almost 2 days later before she would be released.

“It’s amazing what can happen between 2 people in just a couple days time,” Jared said. “Susie was so grieved over what she done – over what they’d done – that she couldn’t stand to be with me anymore. Just like that. It was all over between us. I’m convinced that if she’d known how risky the operation was we’d be together today. And our baby would still be alive.”

Abortion clinic worker wipes blood from sidewalk after botched abortion

The following took place at A Woman’s World Medical Center:

Sidewalk counselors noted that a post-abortive mother who had left the clinic and driven herself out of the parking lot (which I’m sure is a health code violation), drove herself back 20 minutes later.

Walking up the ramp to the front door, she dropped her keys. When she bent over to pick them up, she hemorrhaged a large amount of blood, and then left a trail of blood behind her all the way to the door.

The mother left the clinic again after a half hour,  again driving herself  out of the parking lot alone.

It is unknown what happened to her. The abortion clinic had previously been cited for 31 pages of health code violations .

Here are pictures of an abortion clinic employee  mopping up blood. Apparently, seeing a pool of blood at the entrance of the clinic might be a turn off for some of their expected “clients.”

Clinic worker makes excuse for medical malpractice

When asked about mistakes in their clinic, such as nonpregnant women judged to be pregnant and given abortions, one abortion clinic worker said:

“We’re just too busy to think of everything.”

Los Angeles Doctor Who Killed Two Women Called “Unselfish and Committed”

A pro-lifer in Brad Stetson, editor The Silent Subject: Reflections on the Unborn in American Culture (Westport, Connecticut: Praeger, 1996) (page 8) cited:

“A Los Angeles doctor who operates two abortion clinics is called “an unselfish and committed provider” by a judge who sentenced him to one year probation for the deaths of two women to whom he was administering abortions. Later, following a review by the Medical Board of California, the doctor, who has performed approximately 100,000 abortions, had his medical license revoked.”

Planned Parenthood worker admits they performed abortion nonpregnant woman

From a clinic worker’s notes:

Patient information: Single, Baptist, no children. Wants children. Using spermicidal foam and the rhythm method. Intends to use the Pill after abortion.

Before abortion:  Nervous, realistic

During abortion:  Mild pain

After abortion:  Walked

Observations:  Excellent patient. Pregnancy test was negative today, but Dr. L did not feel she should put off the VPT.[Voluntary Pregnancy Termination: A euphemism for abortion]  Either way, he felt it would relieve anxiety. Rachel was given the choice to wait or have VPT done and decided to go ahead with VPT.  She seemed a little upset, but decision was firm. Nice girl!

Abortion procedures carry risks, both emotional and physical, including the risk of death. To do an invasive, unneeded operation on a woman is malpractice.

Woman Brings Baby’s Severed Head To Clinic

Lime 5 quoted the following story from the El Paso Times:

“Several days after [a Texas abortionist] struggled through a particularly difficult abortion, the patient’s mother returned to the abortion clinic upset and angry. She brought in a milk carton containing a 3 inch fetal head that her daughter had passed after she had massaged the girls abdomen to alleviate her pain. One employee stated, “I remember the eyes were bugging. That’s when I decided to quit.”

Woman’s Ovary Torn Loose During Abortion

The following account appeared in Mark Crutcher  “Lime 5: Exploited by Choice “ (Denton, Texas: Life Dynamics Incorporated, 1996) 26

“On February 27, 1990 “BJ” age 22, underwent an abortion by John Breaux 73. She awoke screaming during the abortion, and begged him to stop. He then had an employee clamp a hand over her mouth. She eventually went under again but awoke this time in a chair in the recovery room, with the bottom of her shirt drenched with blood. The next thing he remembered was the doctor carrying her to his car, after which a friend drove her to the hospital. A note sent by the doctor to the hospital described the abortion as “uneventful” and failed to disclose all the medications he had administered. Because the ligaments around BJ’s uterus had been severed and her right ovary torn loose, her uterus and ovaries had to be removed. The doctor who did the emergency surgery testified: “it would take a lot of force – an extreme amount of force – to do that kind of damage.” He noted that the perforation was 4 inches in length and had caused BJ to lose an incredible amount of blood. The medical board stated that, “having nearly eviscerated his patient and with her clearly in critical condition, he sent her to the hospital in a private car during rush hour… A more egregious example of incompetence and gross negligence is difficult to imagine.”

Abortionist Botches Abortion: Must Pay

Pro-choicers often maintain a legal abortion is safe abortion, however complications from legal abortion occur more often than most people think. Recently, a prominent of late-term abortionist, James Pendergraft, was sued by a woman he injured during an abortion.

This is not the first time this abortionist has been in trouble. Pendergraft, who owns five abortion clinics in Florida and one in Washington DC, has had his medical license suspended four times. His offenses include botched abortions, dispensing drugs without a license, making false threats which he blamed on pro-life activists, and performing abortions too late in pregnancy. His last brush with disciplinary action occurred in January of 2010 when he caused a woman serious injuries while aborting her 19 week pregnancy. He was also in trouble for performing abortions later than the law allowed. The woman he injured had to go to the hospital to have the fetus removed. The woman had to have a hysterectomy.

Pendergraft’s latest legal troubles are due not to a baby he killed but to a baby he failed to tell. In November of 2001, Carol Howard became the patient of Pendergraft. She went in for an abortion at 22 weeks. Her daughter was born alive but seriously injured by the abortion. The daughter suffered massive birth defects and is now 10 years old. The mother sued Pendergraft to cover the daughter’s medical expenses. As severely handicapped child, those medical expenses are significant. The girls problems include cerebral palsy, paralysis on one side of her body, lung damage, and brain damage.

Howard won the lawsuit. Pendergraft was ordered to pay her $18,255,000 in punitive damages, $18,000,000 in compensatory damages and over $400,000 in court costs. This money will go towards the expensive medical care that the girl requires.

Pendergraft is still performing abortions despite having his license revoked four times. He is an example of a doctor who gets away with injuring many women and yet still continues a lucrative practice. His late-term abortion clinic in Washington DC advertises on the Internet. He seeks women patients from throughout the United States who come to have their babies aborted as late as the third trimester. Pendergraft does these abortions by injecting poison into the fetal heart and then causing the woman to go through labor to deliver the dead baby. Many of the women who come to him are carrying babies that are handicapped or otherwise ill. They do not want to continue the pregnancy for fear that the child will suffer or be difficult to care for. Others just do not want to be pregnant because of life situations or experiences.

Women seeking late-term abortions should be aware of whether there doctor has any pending lawsuits against him or whether he has ever had his license revoked. Just because abortion is legal does not mean that it is always safe.

Abortion Deception: Dr. George Tiller

Dr. Tiller was a late term abortionist who practiced in Witchita, Kansas. At the time of his violent and tragic death at the hands of an anti-abortion fanatic, he was facing several malpractice suits and other legal problems. In the following case, Dr. Tiller was accused of deceiving a woman and performing an abortion against her will.
According to Christina Dunigan at Realchoice.com

“Dolores” Meets George Tiller

Dateline: 1/8/99

“In the fall of 1989, [Dolores C.] encountered health problems and bleeding which she associated with pregnancy. On the suggestion of her boyfriend, she went to ‘Women’s Health Care Services’ … to seek medical care and advice.”
On behalf of his client, who I call “Dolores C.” to protect her privacy, attorney Ted Amshoff filed suit against Tiller and his business. What follows is her story, told in her attorney’s words as much as possible.

“When [Dolores C.] first suspected she was pregnant, she did not consider abortion, and she so informed Defendants. [Dolores C.] wanted to keep her baby and she informed Defendants that she did not believe in abortion unless it was the only alternative.”

Dolores had a pregnancy test at Women’s Health Care Services, which confirmed the pregnancy.

“Defendants then told [Dolores C.] that her health was at risk because the pregnancy was ectopic, or tubal, and that the pregnancy was in the fallopian tube on her right side, close to the uterus. Defendants told [Dolores C.] that the risks of death from a ruptured tubal pregnancy was very great, and that ‘surgery’ should be performed to remove the tubal pregnancy.”

Although an occasional undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus) will survive to viability and be delivered without killing the mother, these cases are so rare that they’re considered freakish accidents. Although there have been rumors about doctors successfully transplanting ectopic pregnancies into the uterus, these have not been verified. The only known treatment for ectopic pregnancy is to remove it, either by surgery or by using drugs to kill the embryo and allow it to be expelled or absorbed by the woman’s body.

“In reliance upon the training, expertise, advice, and counsel of Defendants, and under the impression that she was undergoing a procedure to surgically remove a tubal pregnancy, [Dolores C.] consented to such a procedure and submitted to a medical procedure performed by Defendants on November 4, 1989.”

“In actuality, Defendants performed an abortion, terminating a healthy, wanted child or children. [Dolores C.] subsequently learned that her pregnancy had not been ectopic and that the procedure performed had been an abortion.”

Dolores filed suit against Tiller and Women’s Health Care Services in November of 1991.

“[Dolores C.] reasonably relied upon Defendants’ expertise and their representation to submit to the ‘surgery’ as the only method available to save her life.”
The suit also alleges that Tiller and his corporation continued to make attempts to “conceal the true nature of the state of affairs” surrounding the abortion.
“Defendants’ actions in performing an unnecessary and nonconsensual abortion upon Plaintiff was extreme and outrageous conduct, going beyond all possible bounds of decency, and was atrocious, and utterly intolerable in a civilized community.”

I would say so. Tiller’s supporters might think otherwise.
