J.M. Buchanan on “Pro-Life”

“I object to the monopolization of the term pro-life by groups whose agenda is to make abortion illegal and deny women the right and responsibility to decide this very personal matter. I am certainly not “antilife,” nor am I proabortion. I am for choice. The issue is whether women should have that freedom.”

Buchanan, J. M. (2012, Mar 07). Life and health. The Christian Century, 129, 3-3.

Eleanor Smeal: Pro-Choicers Need to Take Back “Moral Highground”

Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation and a leader in the women’s equality movement for more than 30 years, said religious groups and feminists have often been “on a collision course,” but they need to work together for reproductive choice.

“I feel we’re missing the boat in not taking back the moral high ground on this issue.”

Supporters of legal abortion talk strategy. (2001, Apr 11). The Christian Century, 118, 10-10.

Can pro-choicers really have the moral high ground?

Reverend: Being Born Is Not a Right

A cofounder of the Clergy Consultation Service on Abortion, an organization that referred women to illegal abortionists before Roe versus Wade and which helped thousands of women get abortions said the following:

“In my religious tradition, birth was never seen as anything but a gift… To speak of being born as a right is to jar the sensibilities and strain the moral syntax of existence.”

The Rev. Howard Moody in Anna Bonavoglia The Choices We Made: 25 Women and Men Speak out about Abortion (New York: Random House, 1991) 192

Moody has also said that he believes abortion destroys a life, but is pro-choice anyway.

Abort it before It Turns into a “Monster”

Nicholas von Hoffman on how abortions reduce crime:

“Free, cheap abortion is a policy of social defense. To save ourselves from being murdered in our beds and raped on the streets, we should do everything possible to encourage pregnant women who don’t want the baby and will not take care of it to get rid of the thing before it turns into a monster… “

Nicholas von Hoffman, “Understand That Pro-Abortion Is Pro-Life and Vice Versa” Philadelphia Inquirer, July 10, 1992

From Slate:

“Just snuff the little buggers and let’s get on with it… The bumper sticker on the back of my car reads “Caution! The fetus you save will grow up to mug you!”

Ramesh Ponnauru The Party of Death (Washington DC: Regnery Publishing, 2006) 65 – 66

Pro-Choice Nun Speaks

From a pro-choice nun:

“Every woman has a free will. God gave us free will… That’s what separates us from the beasts. Free will is guided by conscience, and conscience is formed not by dogma, what organized religions tell us, but by experience. A woman will answer to God for one thing: Has she followed her conscience in carrying out God’s will? It’s nobody’s right to tell her what her conscience said to her. That’s what men want to take from us… the right to follow our own conscience.”

Sister Margaret Ellen Traxler quoted in Anna Bonavoglia The Choices We Made: 25 Women and Men Speak out about Abortion (New York: Random House, 1991) 64

“Partial-Birth Abortion Like Any Other Surgical Procedure” Says Pro-Choicer

Defenders of partial-birth abortions claim that all surgeries were gruesome:

“Much of the negative reaction… Is the same reaction that might be invoked if one were to listen to a surgeon describing step-by-step almost any other surgical procedure involving blood, human tissue, etc.”

Diane Gianelli “Shock Tactic Ads Target Late-Term Abortion Procedure” American medical news, July 5, 1993, 21 from Ramesh Ponnauru The Party of Death (Washington DC: Regnery Publishing, 2006) 45

But perhaps it could be said that partial-birth abortions are no worse than D&E abortions, which is another common late abortion technique. Here is a diagram of the D&E abortion.

Catholic Theologian: What about “Just” Abortions

Catholic theologian David Maguire, Professor of Moral Theology

“How is it that in speaking of women we so easily reduce human life to physical life? What certitudes persuade theologians that there are only two marginal reasons [to save the life of the mother or to remove a dead or dying unborn baby] to justify abortion? Why is the Vatican comparably sure that while there may be just wars with incredible slaughter, there can be no just abortions?”

Catherine Whitney Whose Life? A Balanced, Comprehensive View of Abortion from Its Historical Context to the Current Debate (New York: Morrow, 1991) 170 – 171

Clinics Should Be Called Places of “Healing and Care” Says Worker

“In an op-ed piece that appeared in the New York Times shortly after a gunman killed some employees and wounded others at two Brookline, Massachusetts, abortion clinics, a counselor at one of the clinics complained that the media kept referring to her workplace as an abortion clinic. “I hate that term,” she declared. At the end of the piece she suggested that her abortion clinic ought to be called “a place of healing and care.”
