Jury member shocked by tales of babies aborted into toilets

On July 21, 2011, a jury of six found that the notorious late-term abortionist James Scott Pendergraft IV was liable for injuries sustained by a pre-born baby during a failed abortion ten years ago.

From a member of the Jury

“One of the things that kept me up at night was hearing the routine practice was for the women to void the fetus’ into the toilet of the facility, often by themselves. The MA testified on occasion movement was seen, yet no vitals were checked or resuscitation was performed. All of these protocols were put into place long ago by Pendergraft. He preys on poor, scared women in their time of desperation…

Tanya [Severance] testified squirming was observed “a couple times” which to me translated to numerous times. All the clinic workers said most of the infants were evacuated into the toilet as well. Pendergraft even testified it was no big deal and that “Most countries squat to give birth”. Needless to say his testimony did him no favors in our eyes.”

The abortionist in this case had his medical license suspended four times as of 2011

Woman suffers complications after abortion: baby born alive

Pro-life author George Grant told the following story about a woman named Bethany de Grassi who had a saline abortion and suffered complications. According to her, her baby was born alive.

First she explains why she had the abortion:

“I was living with a guy at the time,” she told me, “and I really thought we were in love. When I got pregnant, I was happy. I thought we’d just settle down, raise a family, and pursue the American dream. But he had other ideas. When I refused to get an abortion he just moved out. Boom. My whole world caved in. I didn’t know what to do. I was scared and confused.”

Grant says:

Bethany waited almost 3 months before she did anything at all. Finally, she went to a Planned Parenthood clinic. “They told me that they didn’t do the procedure I needed there in the clinic, so they referred me to one of their doctors that had a private practice on the side for late-term abortions. They gave me all kinds of literature with charts and tables and footnotes and all, telling me that the technique was perfectly safe.”

Later, when Bethany was filling out the liability release form, she had a change of heart. “The form had a long, long list of possible complications in tiny print and I started to get really nervous. But the nurse came in and sat by me, assuring me that everything was going to be okay. I believed her.”

She shouldn’t have. Clinic personnel are trained to calm their customers. Sometimes with smiles. Sometimes with lies. Anything, just to get the job done.

The baby was born “gasping”:

Bethany’s troubles began with the delivery. “The baby was gasping when it came out,” she recalled. “It was awful. I started screaming. The doctor was cursing. And the nurse didn’t seem to know what to do. It was a nightmare.”

The child expired quickly and the clinic personnel were able, after a few minutes of coaxing and consoling, to calm Bethany down. She went into recovery was released.

Bethany suffered complications:

2 days later, she suffered a series of seizures and lapsed into a coma. At the hospital, her doctors found that she had hypernatremia – salt poisoning. Her parents were notified and along 6 day struggle for her life ensued. Finally, the medical team at the hospital was able to restore Bethany’s electrolyte balance intravenously and she was roused from the coma. “I should’ve paid attention to my conscience,” she now says. “I knew better than to try to come up with some easy fix for my problems. There’s just no such thing.”

Babies born alive at Midtown hospital, CNN ignores the story

Pro-lifer Nancy Creger Tells the following story. She was doing research for Georgia State Senator Joe Burton on a pro-life bill at Vital Records.

“As I was writing down the names of clinics, the Vital Records director looked at me and said:

“They are having live births at Midtown Hospital.”

Midtown, I learned, specialized in late-term abortions, and advertised in newspapers up and down the East Coast. I asked her how she knew this, and she said she got the death certificates. She explained that birth records were confidential, but death records were public information. We put in a request for a computer search to be done of all births at Midtown. Since Midtown was an all-abortion hospital specializing in late-term, we knew that there should not be any live births reported. However, since birth records were confidential, the Vital Records specialist had to do a computer search of all of the death certificates and compare them with the birth records – a computer match. These guys were anxious to get this information out. I was the perfect vehicle.

They photocopied the death certificates and greatly enlarged them, put them in an envelope and gave them to me.

I took them home, spread them out on my bedroom floor, and cried.

Then I called Ted Turner’s CNN. I knew that this was a huge scandal, and that CNN would give it national coverage. The reporter for CNN was young, and this story was hot. She met with me and I gave her all of my documents – the death certificates – everything. In those days I was very naive, just beginning my long career in investigative journalism. She had the camera team reserved for the day and they were scheduled to start filming at Midtown. Later she informed me that the story had been cancelled. It took many, many phone calls to CNN to get my documents returned to me. Someone at CNN wanted the story buried, just like today with the abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell story of the massacre of babies at his clinic. I never met her again, and my stuff was left at the guard shack at CNN.”

….

Death certificates revealed that in 1980 10 babies survived abortions at Midtown, in 1981 three survived and as of October 1982 one had survived.

One baby lived for 13 hours and five minutes, the longest time; one died in 20 minutes. In addition to the 13-hour survivor, seven others lived for more than an hour, ranging from one hour and 45 minutes to six hours and 20 minutes. Death certificates gave no indication any of the 14 were transported to the neonatal unit at Grady Hospital or any other facility specializing in the care of premature babies. Midtown Hospital asserted that transporting a surviving baby to a hospital was the attending physician’s decision to make.

Nine of the 14 death certificates listed “hospital disposal” or “Midtown Hospital” under the category of “cemetery or crematory name.”

Aborted baby “gasped for breath” for 15 minutes

From an article in The Pittsburgh Press about babies born alive after abortions:

“One nurse testified that the [aborted alive] child gasped for breath for at least 15 minutes following the abortion and no attempts were made to help it in any way. She said she observed a pulse in the upper chest, left neck area. Another nurse said she had seen the baby move and that “one of the foreign residents, who was observing, baptized the child.” According to testimony, someone in the room ordered a lethal dose of morphine, but no one administered it.”

Babies were born alive after abortions “once a day,” says 1977 article

An article in the Medical World News from 1977 contains the following disturbing statement:

“About once a day, somewhere in the US, something goes wrong and an abortion results in a live baby.”

The article also gives this statistic:

“45 of the 670 trimester abortions done in Mount Sinai Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut between 1974 1976 resulted in live births.”

“Avoiding Tough Abortion Complications, a Live Birth” Medical World News, November 14, 1977

Why were live births after abortion so common then? It may have been because many abortions were done by saline injections, which were supposed to poison the baby, and then labor was induced – but sometimes the saline failed, and a live baby was born. Live births still happen today, generally when poison is injected into the baby’s amniotic sac, but fails to kill him or her. More often, however, babies in the second trimester are killed through D&E, where they are dismembered in utero and therefore there is no chance of them being born alive. Former clinic worker: “the baby came out alive”

A former clinic worker identified as “Sandra” describes late-term abortions at the clinic where she worked. According to a mailing sent out by And Then There Were None, a ministry for former clinic workers:

Sandra” began her work in the abortion industry as a translator, but eventually, she was “there holding the instruments as the baby came out, alive.”  Sandra continued, “The largest I saw done illegally was 28 weeks.  They were supposed to go up to 25 weeks… the doctor would fudge the numbers on her chart.”

Former Clinic Worker: Molly Graham

Molly Graham [pseudonym] had several abortions and then worked as an anesthesiologist for an abortion provider. She describes an incident where a baby was born alive:

“The last time I gave anesthesia for an abortion, it was to be a hysterotomy [a C-section abortion, where the baby is removed and set aside to die, seldom performed today,] because the woman was about 6 ½ to 7 months pregnant.

I put her to sleep as usual, the incision was made in the abdomen, then into the uterus, and a baby was pulled out – I mean a fully developed, moving, breathing baby. It hit me like a ton of bricks – the baby was put into a bucket of water and drowned.

I was shaken; I knew at that moment I’d stood silently by and condoned murder, not only this time, but many times before. I told my boss I would no longer give anesthesia for abortions and was removed from those duties.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer on babies born alive after abortions

During the 1980s and early 90s, the most common type of 2nd and 3rd trimester abortion was saline abortion, where a caustic salt solution was injected into the woman’s womb, slowly poisoning the baby and burning her skin. The woman would then go into labor and give birth to a dead baby. In some cases, however, the baby would be born alive.

Here is how one abortion clinic dealt with their live births:’

“At the time of delivery, it has been our policy to wrap the fetus in a towel. The fetus is then moved to another room while our attention is turned to the care of [the woman]. She is examined to determine whether complete placental expulsion has occurred and the extent of vaginal bleeding. Once we are sure her condition is stable, the fetus is evaluated. Almost invariably, all signs of life had ceased.”
