The women I know who have had abortions are not ashamed of a difficult choice they made, but they don’t revel in it either. I asked a friend whether she would talk about it. “Absolutely not,” she said. “This is a story with a lot of pain and even after all these years, few people know.”
Most women who choose an abortion don’t do so because they’ve been raped or because of severe fetal abnormalities, she continued. “They do it for the same reason I did. It just was not the right time or circumstance in which to be pregnant.”
Abortion is difficult even for pro-choice women because the guilt of killing your own child will be made manifest, even when a woman lies to herself that what she did was okay.

Abortionist Martin Haskell originated the D&X (partial birth) procedure because:

Pro-lifers need to encourage women to listen to that little voice that tells them that abortion is wrong. I believe that deep down, everyone knows that abortion is killing. Women who come to the clinic ambivalent may still have their minds changed by sidewalk counselors. Many pro-choice people as well have deep ambivalence about abortions. Often, the more a person knows about abortion, the more uneasiness they feel about it.
“I think that if a woman comes for her 100th abortion it would probably be an injustice to foist her as a mother upon a child. I did have a Yugoslavian woman come to me who had had 24 abortions, mainly in Yugoslavia where abortion is considered a method of contraception. She didn’t know any other way. We taught her about alternative methods of contraception. I never felt any hostility towards her for having so many abortions.”
