Reasons for Late-Term Abortions

“Of women who had an abortion at 16 or more weeks’ gestation, 71% attributed their delay to not having realized they were pregnant or not having known soon enough the actual gestation of their pregnancy. Almost half were delayed because of trouble in arranging the abortion, usually because they needed time to raise money. One-third did not have an abortion earlier because they were afraid to tell their partner or their parents that they were pregnant.”

Most Late-term Abortions Are on Healthy Women and Healthy Fetuses, Says Expert

Ron Fitzsimmons, about one type of late term abortion procedure, D&X:

“The majority of these procedures are performed in the late second trimester on healthy women and healthy fetuses. That’s — the law allows that. Women come in at that point unfortunately, for whatever reason, seeking abortion services. We estimate that approximately 3,000 to 5,000 are performed in the United States on an annual basis.”

ABC Nightline Transcript #97022601-J07, Feb 26, 1997

Remember, this was only one method of late-term abortion. D&X (partial-birth) abortions are now illegal, but abortions continue to be done late in pregnancy

Some Abortionists Perform Second and Third Trimester Abortions

Dr. Mary Campbell, medical director of Planned Parenthood of Metro Washington:

“Clearly they’re anxious to prosecute anybody who’s doing second- or third-trimester abortions. I know people who have said that this would be the end of their third-trimester practice, and probably their second.”

Wider Impact is Foreseen for Bill to Ban Type of Abortion” New York Times Nov. 6 1995

She clearly reveals that there are doctors whose “practices” are performing second and third trimester abortions- proof that these abortions are indeed legal and being done.

The Physical Strain of Late-Term Abortion

In an article on the feminist website “CWLU Herstory Project” the following statement is made about late term abortion and its effect on providers:

15 week unborn baby

“For the abortionist, the pure physical strain is remarkable. Pulling large pieces of fetal material through a resisting cervix takes a lot of strength. Huge blisters on hands are an occupational by-product – one can frequently identify an abortionist by placement of calluses caused by the instruments.”

CWLU Herstory Project http://www.cwluherstory.com/part-iv.html

The “material” of course, consists of arms, legs, heads, etc.

More Doctors Perform Late Abortions

Abortionist Warren Hern:

The startling thing to me was that a very large room was filled — packed. Twenty years ago, there were just two or three doctors in the country doing late abortions.” (Responding to the competitive business of late term abortion).

Late Term Abortionist Offers Keepsakes Of Patients’ Dead Children

The late doctor Tiller used to offer his patients keepsakes of their dead children. From his website:

“If you so desire, we can give you our certificate of premature miscarriage. We can take a lock of hair, if you wish. You may have fetal footprints, if you wish. We can do about whatever it is that you would like to have done.”

Below are pictures two parents had taken at Dr. Tiller’s clinic of them and their aborted child. They had the picture taken as a memento of the baby. Later, the couple came to regret the abortion and gave the pictures to a pro-life organization

Doctor Provides Abortions Up to 32 Weeks

“McMahon is one of relatively few doctors in the country who specialize in performing abortions up to 24 weeks, or almost six months, into a pregnancy. He has, in dire circumstances, done them as far as 32 weeks from conception, just six weeks short of an average delivery date. For the most complicated procedures, he charges $8,000. For the easiest and earliest abortions, he charges $500, which is more than double the rate asked at most clinics.

“That’s my specialty,” this former altar boy says of abortion. “That’s my expertise. That’s my passion.”

LA Times, The Abortions of Last Resort, 1-7-1990

NOTE: At a 1992 National Abortion Federation conference Dr. Martin Haskell was quoted saying that McMahon “performs these [abortions] up to 32 weeks or more.”

Clinic Employee Explains Why Women Have Late-Term Abortions

Abortion clinic employee on the women getting late term abortions:

unborn baby at 16 weeks

“These women know they are pregnant, but not until the 16th or 17th week, when the fetus is kicking and bothering them, do they say, ‘Oh, I have to deal with this.’ It’s not that these women are bad, or they’re wrong. They’re just poor. They don’t lead organized, routine lives.”

Clinic Worker Speaks in Support of Late-Term Abortion

“What’s the difference? Abortion is abortion. The nice folks who are debating this, who want to draw the line and put a limit on gestational age, will just be putting a restriction on poor women. Women who want abortions get them. It will just force the poor women back to unacceptable remedies.”

Anne Walshe, clinic administrator, on late term abortion

Abortion Advocates Support Late-Term Abortion

Abortion advocate on late term abortions:

“Pregnant women do not like to seek late abortions, doctors do not like to perform them. An abortion is not an abstract issue for the woman who seeks it. Her pregnancy is a pressing practical problem and seeks an abortion because she has reasons for wishing to end it. You may not agree with that reason and you may think it wrong for that woman to end her pregnancy. But your agreement and approval is of no consequence. The issue is: should you have the right to force a woman to endure pregnancy and labor because you disapprove of her reason.”
