Canadian doctor: No medical reasons for abortion

Edward Kryn, MD, wrote a letter to Alliance for Life Ontario, November 3, 1995 on whether abortion is ever needed to save a mother’s life

“[I] would like to confirm in writing that today with the advanced state of medicine in Canada, there does not exist a medical reason for an abortion. One must understand that some treatments rarely undertaken to save the life of the mother have the unintentional effect of causing the child in the uterus to die, but these circumstances do not constitute an abortion – medically or morally.”

Woman compares her abortion to a tooth extraction

Trish, who had an abortion:

“Some women, even those who are very pro-choice, talk about having dilemmas and guilt. I didn’t feel anything. No regrets whatsoever. I don’t mean to sound crass, but frankly, it wasn’t any more psychologically damaging or soul-searching than a dental extraction.”

Trish later was unable to conceive a child. The pro-choice author of the book claims:

“Trish’s fertility problems are not related to her past abortion.”

Woman has 13 abortions

From one teenager who had an abortion:

“We didn’t tell my boyfriend’s parents because his sister-in-law had 13 abortions. His parents were going on and on about how you can’t mess with the spirit that many times. We knew they would support us but it was too hot an issue at the time.”

Study: Abortion causes “overwhelming guilt”

One study on the mental health aspects of abortion found the following:

“[N]o amount of rationalization, intellectualization or humanistic considerations can relieve the overwhelming guilt which is present at the unconscious level as a result of an abortion. Furthermore, much of what we encounter at the conscious level regarding the feelings which patients report about abortion represents denial, displacement or rationalization, and we find it rather strange that so many professionals are misled by these commonly employed defensive procedures.”

In abortion, younger patients are more likely to have complications

J Bulfin M.D., OB.-GYN  and researcher, said the following in The Observer, Oct.-Nov., 1975.

“The younger the patient, the greater the gestation, the higher the complication rate…Some of the most catastrophic complications occur in teenagers.”

His quote shows that although abortion was legal in 1975, it was not safe. Legalizing abortion did not make abortion complications go away.

There is a “conspiracy of silence” on abortion’s risks

One study in The Lancet, a very reputable medical journal, says this:

“There has been almost a conspiracy of silence in declaring [abortion’s] risks. Unfortunately, because of emotional reactions to legal abortion, well documented evidence from countries with a vast experience of it, receives little or no attention in either the medical or lay press. This is medically indefensible when patients suffer as a result…It is significant that some of the more serious complications occurred with the most senior and experienced operators…”

At eleven weeks, a fetus senses touch

One doctor says the following about fetal development:

“By the eleventh week, the fetus develops sensitivity to touch on the hands, feet and genital areas…it may be more comfortable for us to attribute a vegetative state to the fetus in the first trimester, but in fact this is the most active period of our lives.”

Children see “fetuses” as babies, says study

Giving the reason why surviving siblings of aborted babies may feel grief and guilt, particularly when the abortion is done after the third or fourth month, researchers said:

“In the presence of prenatal life, young children do not separate the concept of “fetus” from the concept of “baby”. The conceptual difference between the two is a medical and social construct of adults and is not easily understood by children whose approach to the world is concrete.”

Pain researcher says fetus reacts to pain at 16-19 weeks

Doctor Ken Craig, a researcher on pain in premature babies at the University of British Columbia, told the Vancouver Province (August 30, 1995):

“By every measure, the fetus from 16-19 weeks reacts to a painful stimulus in a manner consistent with the perception of pain. At 24-25 weeks post conception, a fetus displays all of the physiological and behavioural reactions you observe in children and adults.”

Boston Globe reporter talks about media bias

This is from an old article, but media bias is still a problem for the pro-life movement.

Ethan Bronner, then a reporter for the Boston Globe, said:

“I think that when abortion opponents complain about a bias in the newsroom against their cause, they’re absolutely right.”

Bronner cited a story of his own on late-term abortions in which he had to fight a copy editor to retain such language as “destroying” the unborn by “crushing forming skulls and bones.”

Bronner said the editor told him, “As far as I’m concerned, until that thing is born, it is really no different from a kidney, it is part of the woman’s body.”
