Remember: District Attorney described filthy conditions in Kermit Gosnell’s facility

Dist. Atty. Seth Williams describing Kermit Gosnell’s clinic after raiding it under suspicion that Gosnell was prescribing illegal narcotics:

“There was blood on the floor. A stench of urine filled the air. A flea-infested cat was wandering through the facility, and there were cat feces on the stairs. Semi-conscious women scheduled for abortions were moaning in the waiting room or the recovery room, where they sat on dirty recliners covered with bloodstained blankets.

All the women had been sedated by unlicensed staff – long before Gosnell arrived at the clinic – and staff members could not accurately state what medications or dosages they had administered to the waiting patients. Many of the medications in the inventory were past their expiration dates.
Investigators found the clinic grossly unsuitable as a surgical facility.

The two surgical procedure rooms were filthy and unsanitary – Agent [Stephen] Doughtery described them as resembling “a bad gas station restroom.”

Instruments were not sterile. Equipment was rusty and outdated. Oxygen equipment was covered with dust and had not been inspected. The same corroded suction tubing used for abortions was the only tubing available for oral airways if assistance for breathing was needed. There was no functioning resuscitation or even monitoring equipment, except for a single blood pressure cuff in the recovery room.”

James Taranto “Back Alley Abortion Never Ended” Wall Street Journal April 18, 2013

We must not forget the horrors of Kermit Gosnell, the fact that he was operating legally, and the fact that pro-choice gatekeepers allowed him to continue operating on women in his filthy clinic even after a woman had died and they knew about the conditions there.

Head of Chain of Abortion Clinics: Some Women are “Devastated” by their Abortions

Clare Murphy, a spokesperson for the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, a chain of abortion clinics, says there is “not a jot of evidence” that women suffer post-abortion trauma.

But she says:

“There will of course be women who, even if they do not regret their decision, feel devastated that this was a decision they had to take in the first place.”

Woman hospitalized for six days after botched abortion at Planned Parenthood

Pro-life author and researcher Kevin Sherlock documented the following:

Stephanie M charged Aleksander Jakubowski with botching an abortion he performed on her at Planned Parenthood in Merrillville, Indiana in 1984. He perforated her uterus. She had to be taken by ambulance from Planned Parenthood to a hospital. At the hospital, she had to undergo corrective surgery. She spent six days in the hospital recovering from her injuries. Planned Parenthood abortionist Clarence Boone performed the corrective surgery.

“Stephanie, in deposition, said she was one of 35 or so women and girls packed into the Planned Parenthood facility that day. She also said Jakubowski, while performing her abortion, “stopped everything,” and said, “it’s all your fault.” When the nurse asked Jakubowski what happened, Stephanie said, Jakubowski replied, “I perforated her uterus.” Stephanie said, “He [Jakubowski] ran out of the room, and I never saw him again.” She said nurses and other staffers came into the room and summoned an ambulance for her. In the excitement, Stephanie said, one Planned Parenthood nurse tried to insert an IV needle in her arm but couldn’t do it properly.

Even though Boone wanted her to come back for follow-up treatment [to Planned Parenthood] after her hospital stay, Stephanie said, she sought medical help elsewhere because she “didn’t want nothing to do with Planned Parenthood after that.” Jakubowski and Planned Parenthood evidently reached an out-of-court settlement with Stephanie in 1986.”

List of Abortion Clinics with Informed Consent Violations

Americans United for Life released a report called UNSAFE: America’s Abortion Industry Endangers Women. For this report, they examined 25,000 pages of health inspection reports from 39 states.

Here is a list of abortion facilities that had violations referring to informed consent. These were violations like the following:

  • Failure to obtain required informed consent at the required time, such as on the same day of procedures or within the state’s required window of time;
  • Failure to have the appropriate licensed staff member obtain the required informed consent;
  • Failure to post or provide patients with contact information for complaint hotlines;
  • Failure to post clinic’s license information in a place where patients could easily see it.

Here is the list.

Interviewer couldn’t convince women to talk about their abortions

Byllye Avery, founder of the National Black Women’s Health Project, interviewed many women about their life experiences. She says:

“Women have been totally silent about all the issues. But the issue they were most silent about was abortion. I was amazed that women would talk about the worst kinds of psychological abuse. But they would not talk about their abortions.”

Quoted in Serena Garcia Collective Voices: Newsletter: Defending Abortion Rights as Black Women (Atlanta, Georgia: SisterSong, Summer 2011) 6

Is there something about abortion that is so traumatic that women can’t talk about it? Many women just want to forget their abortions and never tell anyone. If abortion was just the removal of cells, akin to getting a tooth pulled, why would women have such a hard time owning up to and discussing their abortions?

Owner of second pill in the abortion pill regimen opposed its use in abortion

Cytotec is another name for the drug misoprostol, which was originally developed to treat ulcers but is now used with the abortion pill, mifepristone, to cause abortions. Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract, causing a woman to expel her baby. Mifepristone kills the baby by separating the placenta and cutting off the child’s oxygen and nutrition supply.

The company that has the patent to misoprostol/Cytotec opposed its use in abortions. According to author Melissa Haussman:

“The owner of the Cytotec patent, the Searle Company, consistently lobbied against having its drug included in an official medical abortion procedure.… In August 2000, one month after the drug had gone off-patent, Searle sent a letter to medical practitioners to warn them that Cytotec was not FDA approved for labor or abortion induction, although practitioners already knew that. It has strongly been suggested that the timing of that action was linked to avoiding future liability. Until misoprostol went off patent in July 2000, Searle acted to push any potential US manufacturer away from making mifepristone, since misoprostol would be required as an accompaniment.”

Melissa Haussman Reproductive Rights and the State: Getting the Birth Control, RU-486, and Morning-After Pills and the Gardasil Vaccine to the US Market (Santa Barbara, California: Praeger, 2013) 99

So Searle felt that it was unsafe to use misoprostol to induce abortions or labor, and was afraid of lawsuits due to this.

However, Searle lost the battle to control the use of their drug.

Abortion worker complains more post-abortive women don’t support abortion

Abortion worker Steph Herold expresses her frustration over how few of the women she who came to her clinic are active in the pro-choice movement:

“We need our patients, who we do everything for, to stand up for us. We don’t need them to tell their abortion stories to everyone they know, although of course, that would be great. We need them to fight for abortion access in whatever way makes sense to them. If one in three US women has an abortion by age 45, where are these women? Why don’t they stand up for us?”

Sarah Erdreich Generation Roe: Inside the Future of the Pro-Choice Movement (New York: Seven Stories Press, 2013) 175

Could it be because women don’t find their abortions empowering and don’t want to advocate for abortion after they’ve been wounded by one?

Abortion clinic owner can’t understand why former patients aren’t defending her clinic

Abortion facility owner Maggie Cage ran a full-page newspaper ad during Operation Rescue’s campaign. While pro-lifers staged sit-ins in front of the facility door, Cage called for her former patients to come and “defend” the facility. She couldn’t understand why they weren’t coming back to support the clinic:

“Where are you? Where are all the people we’ve helped over the years? We need you now. When you needed us, we were there. We held your hand and supported you. We see you in restaurants and at the grocery store, at PTA meetings and softball games. You are the businesspeople, the school officials, the politicians, the voters. We kept you safe. We held your secrets. But now we need help. Where are you?”

Quoted in Susan Wicklund This Common Secret: My Journey as an Abortion Doctor (New York: Public Affairs Perseus Books Group, 2007) 160

Could it be because these women didn’t feel so “helped” by their abortions?

Abortionist describes women throwing up after their abortions from “emotional feeling”

Abortionist William J. Sweeney III writes:

“Consider five patients going up to the operating room for a dilation and curettage [for a non-abortion reason]: we put them to sleep and do the procedure: then they go to the recovery room and everything’s fine. But if we take five women upstairs to have abortions by suction curette, at least four of them will vomit as they’re waking up in the recovery room. Now although an abortion is a more delicate procedure technically, it’s practically the same operation as a D&C when you assess what has been done to the patient: same anesthesia, same operating room, same nurses, same doctors. Yet only an occasional D&C patient is nauseated whereas the vast majority of abortion patients will vomit. I think they throw up because of an underlying emotional feeling. Maybe they’re trying to get rid of the baby or their guilt. Or maybe they’re punishing themselves… Legal or not, an abortion is still a traumatic experience for most women.”
