Abortion should be legal because murder is common?

This prochoicer uses very convoluted logic to oppose laws against abortion. He claims that banning abortion makes no sense because murder is common in society, therefore preventing murder by banning abortion is pointless.

14 week sonogram.Thousands of abortions are done every year at this stage

“There is much discussion about the destruction of the fetus, called murder by some… This particular form of murder, if it be that, seems a somewhat hypocritical concern in a society that does little to prevent some 30,000 annual criminal murders and that condones, as do most societies, murder in the service of the national goals determined by its leadership.”

Stephen Fleck, “a Psychiatrist’s View on Abortion” in David F Walbert and J Douglas Butler, editors.  Abortion, Society and the Law (Cleveland: Case Western Reserve press, 1973) 181

A very strange pro-choice argument indeed

Proabortion college student wants women to have more abortions

From one college student:

Pro-choice? I’m Pro abortion. There are too many people on this planet. We need to start convincing more women to have abortions.… I hate children. I think there should be much less of them.

Watch him say it

In fact, population is dropping throughout the world. In America particularly, we are facing a demographic crisis because not enough babies are being born to support the aging generations with their taxes. Many people feel that Social Security will be jeopardized when there are not enough taxpayers to pay into it.

Even if there really were too many people in the world, would killing people to eliminate them really be moral?

Pro-choice psychology professor on inner city babies

Abortion supporter David Lykken supports preventing the inner city  poor (who are often minorities) from having children:

“If you live in the projects on welfare, then you can’t have a baby. And that sounds awful. … But the question is, if you live in a plague area, have you a right to bring a child into a plague area?”

Women have abortions to be good mothers, says Dr.

Angry Letter Received by Pro-life Publication from Post-Abortive Woman

“Enclosed is an article your staff should read. You people think you are saving babies, while you are condemning the world!

As for the woman on TV who feel so guilty about her abortion – who cares? We are sick of hearing about it. Many of us have had abortions and do not have these feelings. My abortion 30 years ago was the best thing for me and the child! I am glad I didn’t bring it into his violent, miserable world.

Lastly, your attempts to link abortion with cancer are pathetic. You people use anything to try to brainwash people.

I pity you all!”

“Abortion a Positive, Life-Loving Choice” Says Feminist

One pro-choice feminist said the following

“Even feminists, even pro-choice activists can be heard to say, “Well, of course abortion is a terrible thing, but it’s better than…” or “Sometimes it’s necessary,” or “It is the better of two terrible choices.” Once we say yes, of course abortion is terrible, we have conceded the question, for expediency is not a sufficient moral counter to evil. In fact, there are good reasons to think that abortion is not terrible, not merely expedient. There are many reasonable, ethical people who believe that although abortion may be emotionally trying, it can be a most positive, moral, life loving choice.”

Professor Noam Chomsky Weighs in on Abortion

“Pretty soon you can imagine legislation prohibiting the washing of hands because thousands of cells are flaked off that could be turned into a stem cell and you can grow a foetus – so you’re killing a person. It’s attacks on women’s rights.”

Prof Noam Chomsky, speaking at a reception in UCD’s O’Reilly Hall. He was awarded the UCD Ulysses Medal, the university’s highest honour.

Anti-abortion activists impose their religious beliefs on others, says writer

A pro-choice writer speaks out against the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, which decreed that a person who harms or kills an unborn child while committing a federal crime can face charges for injuring the unborn baby. For example, someone who kills a pregnant woman could be charged with two counts of murder under the law.

No children, born or otherwise, will be protected by the so-called Unborn Victims of Violence Act that President Bush signed into law last week. The new measure is a legal trifle that makes it a crime to harm a fetus during the commission of another federal crime. The presumed logic of the bill is that terrorists, drug kingpins and interstate kidnappers will be deterred by the fear that they could face an additional charge if they cause a woman to miscarry during the commission of their crimes. We doubt it.

….

As we have argued before, whether a fetus in utero can be defined as a person with rights is at heart a theological question….. The end goal of the anti-abortion movement is nothing less than to impose its religious worldview on the rest of us.

“It doesn’t matter if the fetus is a person. We too are persons, but you can’t force people to donate blood to save other people. Our laws are set up so you can’t force somebody to give any part of themselves to sustain the life of another person.”
