Women Know That It’s a Life

Kirsten Moore
Center for American Progress
Politics of Choice, Newsweek: 2-27-2006

“Women who are thinking about ending a pregnancy are not asking, ‘Is this a life?’ They know that it is. They are asking, ‘Can I take care of this baby?’

Even Though Abortion Kills a “Human Life” It is a Moral Choice

“Even though it kills a human life, abortion is, in fact, the moral choice to make when would-be mothers ascertain that their pregnant circumstances do not enable them to raise a would-be child responsibly. Contrary to popular accusation, it is not the decision to abort but the decision to have a child that is treated with insufficient gravity in our society.”

Pro-Choice Advocate Looks at Sonograms, Admits That the Fetus Is “Life”

“I don’t actually think it is in the interests of feminism or the pro-choice movement to cling so rigidly to outdated notions of “life.” It no longer helps our cause to try to argue that the fetus is not “life.” The reason for this, as people have noted, is that technological advances, like sonograms, where you can see feet on a fetus in the first trimester, have made those claims clearly and patently hollow to even ardently pro-choice people who have seen the black and white staticky fuzziness take shape into human form. How can we possibly claim that the moving creature, with feet and toes that we can see, is not “life”?

Pro-Choice Clergyman Claims That Women “Love” Their Aborted Babies

“Women don’t choose abortion lightly. But their concern for the lifelong welfare and nurture of children leads them to abort. They have such a strong sense of love and responsibility for their potential baby that they want it to be raised with loving concern and promising opportunities for a good life.”

Rev. Edgar Peara “Abortion ban brings bad memories” The Register Guard (Eugene, OR) March 10, 2006

Abortion Clinic Founder Admits That Abortion Terminates a Life

“In the beginning they were calling it a baby. We were saying it was only blood and tissue. Let’s agree this is a life form, a potential life; you’re terminating it. You don’t have to argue that abortion stops a beating heart. It does.” She adds, “I can’t say it’s just like an appendectomy. It isn’t. It’s a very powerful and loaded decision.”

Merle Hoffman, who founded Choices, a Queens, N.Y., abortion clinic.

Saving Unborn Lives Is “Misguided”

“It is an honorable and noble endeavor to protect the life of every fetus. It is misguided. Either society views women, as a whole, as honest, trustworthy and respected enough to determine their own destiny, or we decide that women are an ignorant, manipulative and irresponsible second-class of citizens who need to be controlled. You cannot have it both ways; control the weak while respecting the responsible.”

Abortion As a Tool of Personal Growth

“Women who choose abortion often achieve significant personal growth because the creative essence of pregnancy is redirected. Pregnancy as a profound inner experience directs us to do this…Choosing to have an abortion is an expression of a woman’s power in Life, but the medical system often reinforces the victimization of women by treating us as if we were being rescued.”

Clinic Worker Praises Women Who Have Abortions

“It [having an abortion] takes strength, courage, bravery, and determination. ..People who have abortions think about the future. They think about now. They think about others. “

Many women who have abortions feel pressured into the decision by life circumstances or by their partners. The pressure and emotional distress a woman feels while she’s experiencing an unwanted pregnancy can be intense and profound. Even a good person can turn to abortion as a “quick fix.” This post is not meant as an attack on those who have abortions. But having an abortion is not a selfless, noble act – it is an act that kills a baby.

Defenders of Abortion Can’t Match Photographs

Pro-choice author Janet Hadley said the following in her book “Abortion: between Freedom and Necessity” (Great Britain: Virago Press) 1996:

“Defenders of abortion never have anything to match the visual image of the fetus, the most emotive weapon of all… no words are needed to accompany pictures of little mangled legs, hacked arms, crushed skulls…”

Hadley quotes Tony Kaye, who shot graphic footage of aborted babies for a film he was directing:

“When you see those fetuses, it is pretty much game set and match as far as I’m concerned.”

This was quoted on page 150
