Only 10% of legal abortion deaths are reported, says researcher

Often, legal abortion deaths are not reported.

“On one occasion, for example, Dr. Lester Hippard, chairman of the Los Angeles County Medical Society Committee, which is charged with keeping track of maternal deaths, told the newspaper reported that there had only been for abortion related deaths officially reported as such. But, Dr. Hippard added, he personally knew of at least four other deaths which it followed legal abortions, but had not been reported as such on the death certificates. Furthermore, he said he was certain that these unreported abortion deaths were only the tip of the iceberg.”

According to one estimate less than 10% of deaths from legal abortion are reported as such.

Abortion deaths happening “every day” in Chicago

Michael Grobsmith, chief of the Illinois Department of Public health division of hospitals and clinics, commented on the death of an abortion patient who bled to death after being sent home from the clinic:

“It’s unfortunate, but it’s happening every day in Chicago, and you’re just not hearing about it.”

Abortion does not present simple solutions

From one abortion clinic worker on abortion patients:

“What they think are simple solutions are not as simple as they think. They can die, they can become sterile, and they can have many other complications. That unfortunately is the biggest evil abortions.”

Hundreds of patients experience distress

From one doctor:

“Since abortion was legalized, I have seen hundreds of patients who’ve had the operation. Approximately 10% expressed very little or no concern… Among the other 90% there were all shades of distress, anxiety, heartache, and remorse.”

A conspiracy of silence

A British surgeon who opposed legal abortion said:

“There has been almost a conspiracy of silence and declaring its [abortion’s] risks. Unfortunately, because of emotional reactions to legal abortion, well-documented evidence from countries with vast experience of it receives little attention in either the medical or lay press. This is medically indefensible when patients suffer as a result… The termination of pregnancy is neither as simple nor safe as some of advocates of abortion on demand would have the public believe.”

John and Barbara Willke Handbook on Abortion (Cincinnati: Hayes Publishing Company, Inc., 1979) 96 quoted from Doctor Thomas Hilger’s “the Medical Hazards of Legal Induced Abortion” in Abortion and Social Justice Editor’s Thomas W Hilger’s and Dennis J Horan (New York: Sheed and Ward, 1972)

The doctors race each other

From one former clinic worker:

“The doctors race each other. Especially on Saturdays, they compete to see who can get the most patients done.”

Abortion surgeons don’t scrub between patients

From a clinic worker:

“Our surgeons have a technique, even though I shouldn’t really say this, where they don’t really scrub between cases. They’ll scrub once and they’ll do a case and they’ll go next door to the next room and put on a new gown and gloves. Without scrubbing between. The surgery is only 3 to 5 minutes long… A person who is eight weeks in term only needs two minutes worth of surgery from a good doctor…”

Magda Denes, PhD. In Necessity and Sorrow: Life and Death in an Abortion Hospital (New York: Basic Books inc 1976)236

This is an old quote, but it shows how little regard abortionists had for their patients after legalization.

Pro-choicer: abortion doctor was “victim”

Tommy Tucker was an abortion doctor who killed two women, injured many more, allowed people with no medical training to perform abortions in his clinic, and allegedly killed a newborn baby that survived abortion. He surrendered his license, But, according to Ron Fitzsimmons from the National Coalition of Abortion Providers:

“Tommy should get the appropriate penalty, On the other hand, I really do think Tommy in many ways is a victim.”

Abortionist on underestimating fetal age

One abortionist, who incidentally has had several malpractice lawsuits against him, said the following:

”When you get caught in the middle of an abortion that is further along than anticipated, you have a tremendous motivation to find out what to do. So that’s when we would just discuss with each other what worked to get out of that situation.”

Jack Hitt “Who Will Do Abortions Here?” New York Times Jan 18, 1998

He sounds as though this is a regular occurrence – for abortionists to underestimate the length of a pregnancy and then be stuck wondering what to do. This does not seem very encouraging. It must put the woman at risk for infection and other complications for the abortionist to start with one procedure and then not know what to do about switching to another one. This is one reason why ultrasounds before abortions are so important – they verify the length of a pregnancy. So these mistakes cannot be made.

OB/GYN: abortionists are “grade B doctors”

From a doctor who elected not to perform abortions but is pro-choice:

”It’s seen as the dirty work of our field. The sad truth is that the people who moonlight at the clinics are grade-B doctors. They’re not the cream of the crop. And it’s not because they’re committed. It’s because they can’t find steady work.”
