Pro-Choice Activist Defends Abortion at 37 Weeks

Ann Furdedi, a pro-choice speaker, is quoted saying:

“I looked at the gestations of some of these late terminations and was shocked to discover the latest termination was of a pregnancy of 37 weeks. My own son was born at 37 weeks and he was not regarded as a premature baby. There are two ways you can think about the woman who had this abortion. You can see her as the most callous, brutal woman whoever existed, or you think of her as the most desperate woman on earth to have requested abortion at that stage. My view is that she would be the most desperate woman on earth to consider that her child would be better not born alive. I think the last thing women need is the law dictating and restricting choice and making judgments about their decisions. Women are the people who have to live with the choices they make and they should decide, regardless of the stage in pregnancy.”

British Abortionist Now Argues For Limits

British abortionist Dr. Vincent Argent stated, in an article in the British publication “The Telegraph” that the legal limit for performing abortions should be 16 weeks. He describes some of the later abortions that he has performed:

“There are two main types of procedure; the medical type, which kills the baby via medication, meaning that the woman miscarries a stillborn. If the baby is 22 weeks or older, it will be given a lethal injection in the womb, to ensure it is not born alive. Alternatively the surgical procedure uses instruments to remove parts of the dismembered body from the uterus, limb by limb. It is hard to describe how it feels to pull out parts of a baby, to see arms, and bits of leg, and finally the head.”
He then goes on to say:

“Given the nature of this experience, it greatly concerns me how lightly some of these decisions are made.

For every woman who comes late to the clinic because she did not realise she was pregnant, there will be another who feels it is simply their right to have an abortion whenever they like, and feels no need to explain herself at all. A third will seek a late abortion because her circumstances have changed. It might be a change of job; a relationship has broken down; her partner is now in prison; perhaps money is tight. For me, these are no reasons to carry out such a distressing procedure.

Recently, one woman came to me at the age of 42. After years of IVF treatment, she had finally conceived for the first time. Yet, when she found out she was carrying twins she wanted to have one aborted.”

Late-Term Abortions are “Too Often, Not for Any Urgent Medical Reason”

A reporter at the Washington Post is recorded saying:

“I didn’t know it at the time, of course, and maybe the people who supplied my data — the usual pro-choice groups — were giving me what they thought was precise information. And precise I was. I wrote that “just four one-hundredths of one percent of abortions are performed after 24 weeks” and that “most, if not all, are performed because the fetus is found to be severely damaged or because the life of the mother is clearly in danger.”

It turns out, though, that no one really knows what percentage of abortions are late-term. No one keeps figures. But my Washington Post colleague David Brown looked behind the purported figures and the purported rationale for these abortions and found something other than medical crises of one sort or another. After interviewing doctors who performed late-term abortions and surveying the literature, Brown — a physician himself — wrote: “These doctors say that while a significant number of their patients have late abortions for medical reasons, many others — perhaps the majority — do not.”…In the latter stages of pregnancy, the word abortion does not quite suffice; we are talking about the killing of the fetus — and, too often, not for any urgent medical reason.”

Baby Survives Abortion

One nurse told this story:

“I, too, witnessed a similar incident during one very long night shift in the emergency room. We were summoned to get a “pregnant woman in distress” out of her car. The first to arrive was a paramedic, who reported hearing a little cry as she approached. She tried to give the baby rescue breaths, but a new infant can’t tolerate more than a couple minutes without oxygen before permanent brain damage occurs, as you know. By the time we got the infant inside, she was already cyanotic [blue] and, with the parents’ urging, the ER doc pronounced her [dead] almost immediately. The focus turned to stabilizing the mom who was bleeding profusely. I felt so badly for her and tried to comfort. She was quite cold to my attempts, which, of course, raised suspicions. When mom’s “primary physician” arrived on scene, we all realized what was going on – that it was, in fact, an abortion. This was a perfectly formed 26-week baby. Someone laid her on a table. As soon as I saw her I nearly fell apart. The image of that beautiful, fully formed, perfect little infant haunts me to this day.”

Reasons for Late-Term Abortions

“Of women who had an abortion at 16 or more weeks’ gestation, 71% attributed their delay to not having realized they were pregnant or not having known soon enough the actual gestation of their pregnancy. Almost half were delayed because of trouble in arranging the abortion, usually because they needed time to raise money. One-third did not have an abortion earlier because they were afraid to tell their partner or their parents that they were pregnant.”

Most Late-term Abortions Are on Healthy Women and Healthy Fetuses, Says Expert

Ron Fitzsimmons, about one type of late term abortion procedure, D&X:

“The majority of these procedures are performed in the late second trimester on healthy women and healthy fetuses. That’s — the law allows that. Women come in at that point unfortunately, for whatever reason, seeking abortion services. We estimate that approximately 3,000 to 5,000 are performed in the United States on an annual basis.”

ABC Nightline Transcript #97022601-J07, Feb 26, 1997

Remember, this was only one method of late-term abortion. D&X (partial-birth) abortions are now illegal, but abortions continue to be done late in pregnancy

Some Abortionists Perform Second and Third Trimester Abortions

Dr. Mary Campbell, medical director of Planned Parenthood of Metro Washington:

“Clearly they’re anxious to prosecute anybody who’s doing second- or third-trimester abortions. I know people who have said that this would be the end of their third-trimester practice, and probably their second.”

Wider Impact is Foreseen for Bill to Ban Type of Abortion” New York Times Nov. 6 1995

She clearly reveals that there are doctors whose “practices” are performing second and third trimester abortions- proof that these abortions are indeed legal and being done.

The Physical Strain of Late-Term Abortion

In an article on the feminist website “CWLU Herstory Project” the following statement is made about late term abortion and its effect on providers:

15 week unborn baby

“For the abortionist, the pure physical strain is remarkable. Pulling large pieces of fetal material through a resisting cervix takes a lot of strength. Huge blisters on hands are an occupational by-product – one can frequently identify an abortionist by placement of calluses caused by the instruments.”

CWLU Herstory Project http://www.cwluherstory.com/part-iv.html

The “material” of course, consists of arms, legs, heads, etc.

More Doctors Perform Late Abortions

Abortionist Warren Hern:

The startling thing to me was that a very large room was filled — packed. Twenty years ago, there were just two or three doctors in the country doing late abortions.” (Responding to the competitive business of late term abortion).

Late Term Abortionist Offers Keepsakes Of Patients’ Dead Children

The late doctor Tiller used to offer his patients keepsakes of their dead children. From his website:

“If you so desire, we can give you our certificate of premature miscarriage. We can take a lock of hair, if you wish. You may have fetal footprints, if you wish. We can do about whatever it is that you would like to have done.”

Below are pictures two parents had taken at Dr. Tiller’s clinic of them and their aborted child. They had the picture taken as a memento of the baby. Later, the couple came to regret the abortion and gave the pictures to a pro-life organization
