Abortion Provider: Luis Barquet

Barquet was an illegal abortionist who simply began to practice legally after Roe Vs. Wade. It is unknown how many women he killed before Roe.

He was an abortionist in Cuba before fleeing to Miami in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s. He was arrested for illegal abortion in Miami in 1961. In 1962 a study by the International Association of Chiefs of Police called him “a butcher;”, and noted that he “made a fortune” performing illegal abortions ” in back rooms and motels.” Barquet was ordered to leave the U.S. in 1963 but returned days later. He was indicted for bribery in New York in 1965 but remained a fugitive until his 1966 arrest in Florida.

Barquet successfully challenged Florida’s abortion laws in 1972 and set up a legal abortion clinic. He was arrested in 1976 on grounds that his abortion facility constituted a public nuisance. Barquet’s son reopened the facility, retaining Dr. Eduardo F. Elias, while Barquet was in jail.

Marina DeChapell died following pulmonary arrest during an abortion by Elias at Barquet’s clinic. The facility allegedly lacked emergency equipment. Barquet was serving a one-year sentence for an unspecified crime at the time of the death.

Abortion Provider: Ralph Robinson

Abortionist Ralph Robinson grossly botched a number of abortions, including an April 1992 incident at the Summit Medical Center abortion clinic when he suctioned Stacey Wade’s right ureter right out of her body.

On March 2, 1991, Robinson performed an abortion on Rhonda L. Bradford the Chattanooga Women’s Clinic abortion mill. He appeared rushed and began the abortion immediately upon entering the room, giving Bradford no time to ask any questions. She screamed in pain and was rushed to Erlanger Hospital for emergency surgery to repair potentially fatal damage, to include a ruptured uterus, lacerated intestines, and massive bleeding. Surgeons removed the scalped head of a preborn baby from her abdominal cavity, and she was hospitalized for a week. The abortion mill’s records were falsified to show that Bradford was in “good condition after the recovery” when in fact her life was in danger. Robinson did not maintain privileges at any hospital in the county, and did not contact the doctor treating Rhonda’s complications to provide information or assistance. Robinson was found judgment-proof due to his lack of malpractice insurance and the transfer of any substantial assets out of his name.

Missouri Medical Board records indicate that Robinson was licensed with restrictions in 1988. The Ohio Medical Board suspended his license in 1989, and the Kentucky Medical Board placed restrictions on his license in 1988. The Kentucky Medical Board denied his request to terminate his probation on August 14, 1990, following a November 9, 1987 complaint. He had a restriction on prescribing Schedule II or Schedule III drugs. Washington, DC disciplined him in 1990 for filing a document he knew or should have known was false or misleading. He voluntarily surrendered his California medical license in 1991 after charges were brought against him for frequently prescribing, dispensing, or administering controlled substances for undiagnosed pain, for prolonged periods of time and in appropriate combinations. He was disciplined in 1991 in Virginia due to disciplinary actions in other states.

Abortion Provider: Mahlon Douglas Cannon

On August 13, 1986, abortionist Mahlon Douglas Cannon botched an abortion and killed Covina preschool teacher Donna Heim, 20, at the HER Medical Clinic. Heim was asthmatic and began to suffer extreme respiratory distress during Cannon’s abortion procedure. Instead of treating this breathing problem, Cannon chose to ignore it and complete the abortion.

In June 1991, the California Medical Board adopted the decision of administrative law judge Richard J. Lopez that Cannon had been incompetent and negligent in treating at least eight abortion patients, including Heim. Cannon continued to perform abortions at the Family Planning Associates abortion mill on South Westmoreland Avenue in Los Angeles until he surrendered his medical license on July 10, 1991.

Judge Lopez found that Cannon routinely did not perform required physical exams on his abortion patients, take medical histories or administer standard tests. In one case, the abortionist aborted one woman and sent her home despite severe bleeding. She later rushed to a hospital emergency room in severe distress. When the hospital called Cannon, he said that she should be sent home and come in for an office visit in a week or two. Fortunately, the hospital disregarded the abortionist’s advice and performed emergency surgery, which revealed a perforated uterus and severe hemorrhage that required an emergency hysterectomy.

Abortion Provider: Ester Pimentel

Ester Pimentel was one of the physicians sued for standing around doing nothing while Diane Watson went into cardio-respiratory arrest during an abortion.

Ester Pimentel was one of the physicians sued for standing around doing nothing while Diane Watson went into cardio-respiratory arrest during an abortion.

Pimentel and her husband, Henry, were arraigned on charges of allowing a non-physician to practice medicine on public aid patients. A former employee also said that Henry Pimentel would perform surgery but sign it off as being performed by Ester for billing to public aid, including 7 abortions performed while Ester was in the Philippines. (Channel 5 News at Ten WMAQ-TV Chicago, 1989; Chicago Tribune 7-28-90, 2-8-91)

The Illinois Department of Professional Licensing has disciplinary actions on file against both Ester and Henry. Esther was put on probation in 1994 for “Alleged fraudulent billing and lack of quality of care rendered.” Henry’s license was suspended in 1991 for “Performed several operations in which he signed another doctor’s name to the Public Aid forms because, at that time, he was not eligible to participate in the Medical Assistance Program. In addition, for approximately seven Years, he prescribed controlled substances on a non-renewed license. On May 11, 1990, he pleaded guilty to vendor fraud in Cook County.” His license was restored on probation in 1994.

Abortion Provider: Ronald C Margolis

Abortionist Ronald C. Margolis has served time in jail for Medicaid fraud. He was also cited by the medical board for various safety violations in his practice.

He submitted claims for $55,000 for which he was not entitled. The medical board stated that he instructed his staff to administer expired injectable medications, reused gynecological instruments without sterilization, failed to follow sanitation procedures such as washing his hands and using gloves, regularly recorded tests as negative when the tests had not actually been performed, and that his emergency supply kit lacked certain essential drugs.

Abortion Provider: Anthony A. Dunkwu

Dr. Anthony A. Dunkwu was found “grossly careless” by a medical board after a severely botched abortion on a woman in his care- but the hospital was able to avoid reporting him to the National Practitioner Data Bank, so prospective patients may not know of his history.

In March 2000, Dunkwu estimated that one of his patients was about 10 weeks pregnant. He did not order a sonogram, and began the abortion. Dunkwu thought that he might have perforated the woman’s uterus, and stopped the procedure. A member of his staff took the patient to Inova Alexandria Hospital so that he could complete the abortion under general anesthesia. He examined her again, and estimated her pregnancy at 12 to 13 weeks. He felt a separate mass, which he identified as a fibroid. But the “mass” he had mistaken for a tumor was actually the woman’s uterus! He cut open the uterus and removed a lifeless male fetus weighing about 2.7 pounds. Dunkwu estimated that it was 20 to 22 weeks old. In fact, it was 30 weeks old and probably viable.

Alexandria Hospital placed Dunkwu’s clinical privileges on probation for 29 days, one day short of the punishment that has to be reported to the National Practitioner Data Bank.

An informal board committee found Dunkwu to have been “grossly careless,” according to the board order, and reprimanded him.

Abortion Provider: Chris Simopoulos

Abortionist Chris Simopoulos was arrested on July 25, 1984, for attempting an abortion on an undercover policewoman who was not pregnant. His medical license was suspended, and the Virginia Board of Medicine said that he “posed an imminent danger to the public safety and welfare.”

An insurance company won a judgment against the abortionist for giving false answers on his insurance application. The insurance company claimed that Simopoulos “gave false answers to several questions in his application for coverage, including criminal background and medical license information.” Simopoulos had been convicted of performing second-trimester abortion outside a hospital, and had had his medical license revoked in 1980. He answered “negative” to questions relative to any restrictions on his license and convictions for any crimes.

One National Organization for Women (NOW) spokesperson described his abortion clinic: “It was dark and dirty. There were blood stains on the bathroom wall and they had been there for several days.”

Another suit against him claimed battery and sterility in committing an abortion performed on the woman against her will.

His license was suspended and his insurance voided on the charges of performing abortions on non-pregnant women. He finally fled to Greece to escape extradition, leaving behind a condominium and a $400,000 house.

Abortion Provider: Rodger A. Fraser

On February 8, 2002, abortionist Rodger A. Fraser had his medical license suspended by the Virginia Board of Medicine for botching an abortion on November 20, 2001 at the Commonwealth Women’s Clinic abortion facility in Falls Church.

Ignoring his suspension, the abortionist committed 22 abortions the very next day, pocketing $1,440 at the Capital Women’s Health Clinic abortion mill in Western Henrico County, Virginia, in just three hours of work. Just four days later, he applied for a job in a Jackson, Mississippi abortion clinic.

On April 23, 2002, Henrico General District Judge Burnett Miller III certified to a county grand jury four felony counts of practicing medicine without a license against Fraser. On June 12, 2002, Henrico County Circuit Judge L.A. Harris Jr. convicted Fraser on four felony counts of practicing medicine without a license. Each count carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

On August 27, 2002, Henrico Circuit Judge L.A. Harris Jr. sentenced Fraser to four months in prison. Fraser will now never be able to legally practice medicine in the United States, and was working as a motel night clerk before his incarceration.

Abortion Provider: Michael Gold

Abortionist Michael Gold of Burlington, Vermont, seems to have a very short fuse.

According to a letter to the Vermont Medical Board dated March 11, 1992, he became enraged at a female pro-lifer who was praying outside his facility.

He simulated masturbating in front of her as she prayed. Another protester recorded Gold screaming at the woman “You c–t! F–k you, c–t! You’re an ugly f–ing c–t! Did you ever have a pr–k inside you? Did anyone ever f–k you? You’re too ugly for anyone to want to f–k!”

The Vermont Medical Board took no action.

One would hope Dr. Gold maintains better composure while performing abortions. A woman peacefully utilizing her First Amendment Rights to free speech and assembly should not be subjected to attacks on her appearance and sex life – particularly not by someone who is supposed to be providing a service to women. Gold’s alleged comments are misogynistic in the extreme. I hope he has a better attitude toward the women he operates on.
