Abortion Provider: Anthony A. Dunkwu

Dr. Anthony A. Dunkwu was found “grossly careless” by a medical board after a severely botched abortion on a woman in his care- but the hospital was able to avoid reporting him to the National Practitioner Data Bank, so prospective patients may not know of his history.

In March 2000, Dunkwu estimated that one of his patients was about 10 weeks pregnant. He did not order a sonogram, and began the abortion. Dunkwu thought that he might have perforated the woman’s uterus, and stopped the procedure. A member of his staff took the patient to Inova Alexandria Hospital so that he could complete the abortion under general anesthesia. He examined her again, and estimated her pregnancy at 12 to 13 weeks. He felt a separate mass, which he identified as a fibroid. But the “mass” he had mistaken for a tumor was actually the woman’s uterus! He cut open the uterus and removed a lifeless male fetus weighing about 2.7 pounds. Dunkwu estimated that it was 20 to 22 weeks old. In fact, it was 30 weeks old and probably viable.

Alexandria Hospital placed Dunkwu’s clinical privileges on probation for 29 days, one day short of the punishment that has to be reported to the National Practitioner Data Bank.

An informal board committee found Dunkwu to have been “grossly careless,” according to the board order, and reprimanded him.

Abortionist Delays Calling Ambulance For Injured Woman Until Protesters Leave

“On August 19, 1988 Tamera had an abortion by Dr. X in a Fargo, North Dakota, abortion clinic. Afterward, she bled profusely, suffered low blood pressure, and drifted in and out of consciousness. The clinic staff instructed her to squeeze her legs together and attempt to clench her vagina. When they tried to move her, she had a gush of blood and her friend demanded that she be taken to the hospital. The abortionist refused, and instead performed at least one D&C in an unsuccessful attempt to stop the bleeding. Her friend demanded to see Tamera and again insisted that they “do something.” Antiabortion protesters were in front of the building during this time, and Roe waited until they left to call an ambulance. At that point, 5 1/2 hours had passed since Tamera’s injury. She later recalled the emergency room personnel were shouting, “We’re losing her, we’re losing her.” She was given transfusions of several pints of blood, and was given an emergency hysterectomy to stop the bleeding.”

Abortion Provider: Chris Simopoulos

Abortionist Chris Simopoulos was arrested on July 25, 1984, for attempting an abortion on an undercover policewoman who was not pregnant. His medical license was suspended, and the Virginia Board of Medicine said that he “posed an imminent danger to the public safety and welfare.”

An insurance company won a judgment against the abortionist for giving false answers on his insurance application. The insurance company claimed that Simopoulos “gave false answers to several questions in his application for coverage, including criminal background and medical license information.” Simopoulos had been convicted of performing second-trimester abortion outside a hospital, and had had his medical license revoked in 1980. He answered “negative” to questions relative to any restrictions on his license and convictions for any crimes.

One National Organization for Women (NOW) spokesperson described his abortion clinic: “It was dark and dirty. There were blood stains on the bathroom wall and they had been there for several days.”

Another suit against him claimed battery and sterility in committing an abortion performed on the woman against her will.

His license was suspended and his insurance voided on the charges of performing abortions on non-pregnant women. He finally fled to Greece to escape extradition, leaving behind a condominium and a $400,000 house.

Woman Needs Six Hours of Surgery after Her Abortion

“Robin” age 19, had an abortion by Dr. X on February 22, 1980. As the doctor later admitted, he realized during the abortion that the fetus was closer to 16 or 17 weeks than the 11 or 12 weeks he had estimated, but he continued to employ an early abortion technique on this advanced pregnancy. Robin pleaded for him to stop due to the pain, but he told her that he was saving her money by not giving her anesthetic and to “hold on an little longer.” He persisted for over an hour, perforating her uterus and bladder and lacerating her cervix. Although Robin went into shock, there was a delay of over an hour before she was finally taken to the hospital. Even then, the clinic sent her in a taxi rather than an ambulance. In the emergency room, doctors found the abdomen full of blood. Robin required 16 units of blood, and six hours in surgery to repair her uterus and bladder. She also needed a hysterectomy. She spent four days in the intensive care unit, nearly died and was hospitalized for about a month.

Since her release from the hospital, Robin has suffered thrombophelbitis, urinary tract infections, pain and swelling in her leg, migraines and painful and irregular periods. Medical records show that the pregnancy was between 19 and 21 weeks.

Robin was fortunate to have survived. Read the stories of some women who were not as fortunate.

Abortion Provider: Rodger A. Fraser

On February 8, 2002, abortionist Rodger A. Fraser had his medical license suspended by the Virginia Board of Medicine for botching an abortion on November 20, 2001 at the Commonwealth Women’s Clinic abortion facility in Falls Church.

Ignoring his suspension, the abortionist committed 22 abortions the very next day, pocketing $1,440 at the Capital Women’s Health Clinic abortion mill in Western Henrico County, Virginia, in just three hours of work. Just four days later, he applied for a job in a Jackson, Mississippi abortion clinic.

On April 23, 2002, Henrico General District Judge Burnett Miller III certified to a county grand jury four felony counts of practicing medicine without a license against Fraser. On June 12, 2002, Henrico County Circuit Judge L.A. Harris Jr. convicted Fraser on four felony counts of practicing medicine without a license. Each count carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

On August 27, 2002, Henrico Circuit Judge L.A. Harris Jr. sentenced Fraser to four months in prison. Fraser will now never be able to legally practice medicine in the United States, and was working as a motel night clerk before his incarceration.

Doctor Botches Abortion, leaves woman “Expelling Fetal Tissue”

“Linda” had an abortion performed by Dr. X on April 5, 1986. When she was examined by the abortionist prior to the procedure, he and several others were talking back and forth, unsure of the age of the fetus. Finally, one of them said “we’ll say 13 weeks,” and the others all agreed. The doctor then began performing a suction abortion and a few minutes later removed the suction cannula from the patient and left the room. Linda was led into a waiting room and then discharged. On April 8 she suffered from a bloated and sore abdomen, with pain so severe that she became alarmed and called her sister. After she began to hemorrhage, discharging large clots of blood and tissue, her sister called an ambulance. When paramedics arrived, they found Linda bleeding profusely in severe pain, and discharging fetal tissue. They took her to a local hospital where a D & C was performed to remove the retained tissue. When Linda called the clinic to inform then of the emergency, an employee reponded “Well, you wanted to kill the baby and it’s dead now, so what’s the problem?”

Abortion Provider: Michael Gold

Abortionist Michael Gold of Burlington, Vermont, seems to have a very short fuse.

According to a letter to the Vermont Medical Board dated March 11, 1992, he became enraged at a female pro-lifer who was praying outside his facility.

He simulated masturbating in front of her as she prayed. Another protester recorded Gold screaming at the woman “You c–t! F–k you, c–t! You’re an ugly f–ing c–t! Did you ever have a pr–k inside you? Did anyone ever f–k you? You’re too ugly for anyone to want to f–k!”

The Vermont Medical Board took no action.

One would hope Dr. Gold maintains better composure while performing abortions. A woman peacefully utilizing her First Amendment Rights to free speech and assembly should not be subjected to attacks on her appearance and sex life – particularly not by someone who is supposed to be providing a service to women. Gold’s alleged comments are misogynistic in the extreme. I hope he has a better attitude toward the women he operates on.

Abortion Provider: John Alderman

Abortionist John Alderman, who had problems with substance abuse, botched an abortion on Lena A. Renfro. The abortionist told her that she was only 2 weeks pregnant, so she agreed to a D&C abortion. During the procedure, she experienced severe pain, so she went to a nearby hospital and was diagnosed as being 5 months (22 weeks) pregnant.

Her preborn baby was born later, and subsequently died due to injuries sustained during the botched abortion attempt.

A Texas Medical Board document found that Alderman “self-administered pain medications including Talwin, nitrous oxide, and Buprenex, taken on a regular basis until November 1985 … Alderman acknowledged his dependency on Talwin and admitted himself for substance abuse treatment at Clearview Hospital,” and was discharged December 22, 1985, diagnosed with “Drug abuse, in remission;” Alderman “self-administered, without a prescription, the medication Valium” around the end of November 1986; “Alderman has engaged in intemperate use of drugs, that in the opinion of the Board, could endanger the lives of patients … Alderman has engaged in unprofessional or dishonorable conduct that is likely to deceive or defraud the public or injure the public by writing prescriptions or dispensing to himself, as a known habitual user, narcotic drugs, controlled substances or dangerous drugs … Alderman has shown an inability to practice medicine with reasonable skill and safety to patients …” The abortionist’s medical license was suspended for five years on July 1, 1987.

Alderman was sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison for tax evasion and filing false Medicare claims for abortions, for which women had already paid. U.S. District Judge Royal Furgeson also sentenced him to two years of supervised release time and a $200 fine. Alderman paid $125,999 in restitution before his sentencing. As lead abortionist for the Petroplex Gynecological Clinic, Alderman charged clients $300 in cash and then sent false claims to Medicaid for reimbursement. In all, he filed $25,169 in false claims from 1994 through 1997 and underreported about $119,003 in 1995 and $115,160 in 1996 in income reported to the IRS.

Abortion Provider: Jasbir Ahluwalia

Abortionist Jasbir Ahluwalia has a long history of botching various surgical procedures;

— He was sued by a husband and wife who alleged that he caused severe and permanent brain damage to their child during delivery. At six years of age, the boy was determined to have the mental functioning of a 4-week-old. Ahluwalia settled the suit in 1989 for more than $1.3 million. In the course of the suit, lawyers for the couple raised questions about the quality of Dr. Ahluwalia’s medical training, much of which he received in Uganda.

— In March 1991, a Dallas woman sued him, accusing him of perforating her uterus during an abortion. As a result, surgeons had to remove her uterus. Also in 1991, another Dallas woman sued him. She, too, said he perforated her uterus during an abortion. Ahluwalia settled both suits in 1993.

— In 1995, he was sued by an Erath County woman on whom he had performed a hysterectomy. She alleged that he mistakenly blocked a ureter with stitches. So severe were the complications that, four months later, another surgeon had to remove her kidney. Had she known of Dr. Ahluwalia’s prior problems, patient Linda Runnels said recently, “I wouldn’t have used him for sure.” Her suit was settled.

Finally, in 1996, the Medical Board of Texas took action. It acted because Ahluwalia had lost his privileges at Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital. His privileges had been pulled because he “failed to adequately manage various high-risk pregnancies.” No mention was made of his previous lawsuits, and the discipline was minimal. Board members voted to require him to take 50 hours of continuing medical education and keep adequate patient records. And he was ordered to subscribe to the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Ahluwalia still practices gynecology in Stephenville.
