“To begin, I must say that until yesterday, Friday, July 2, 2004, I was strongly pro-choice. I am a pre-medical student, and being very scientific, I understood that the mass of cells that forms the fetal body is not often capable of survival before 24 weeks in the womb.
I am also somewhat liberal, and I believed that every woman should have the right to choose what she did with her body and one that could potentially be growing inside of her.
This summer, I was accepted into a pre-medical program in NYC in which we are allowed to shadow doctors and see all sorts of medical procedures. When given the opportunity to see an abortion, I did not hesitate to accept the offer. It was something new, edgy, and exciting that I had never seen.
When I entered the operating room, it felt like any other I had ever been in. On the table in front of me, I saw a woman, legs up as if delivering a child although she was asleep. Next to her was a tray of instruments for the abortion and a vacuum machine for suctioning the fetal tissues from the uterus.
The doctors put on their gowns and masks and the procedure began. The cervix was held open with a crude metal instrument and a large transparent tube was stuck inside of the woman.
Within a matter of seconds, the machine’s motor was engaged and blood, tissue, and tiny organs were pulled out of their environment into a filter. A minute later, the vacuum choked to a halt.
The tube was removed, and stuck to the end was a small body and a head attached haphazardly to it, what was formed of the neck snapped. The ribs had formed with a thin skin covering them, the eyes had formed, and the inner organs had begun to function.
The tiny heart of the fetus,obviously a little boy, had just stopped — forever. The vacuum filter was opened, and the tiny arms and legs that had been torn off of the fetus were accounted for. The fingers and toes had the beginnings of their nails on them.
The doctors, proud of their work, reassembled the body to show me. Tears welled up in my eyes as they removed the baby boy from the table and shoved his body into a container for disposal.
I have not been able to think of anything since yesterday at 10:30 besides what that baby boy might have been. I don’t think that people realize what an abortion actually is until they see it happen.
I have been tortured by these images – so real and so vivid – for two days now…and I was just a spectator. Never again will I be pro-choice, and never again will I support the murder of any human being, no matter their stage in life.”

If the story is real or not, nothing changes the fact the murder it’s murder. I had always been against abortion, two weeks ago I committed the most evil thing a woman can do. I had my reasons to why, but I will not say that the reasons I had excuse the evil thing I did. I know I will forever regret what I did and that I will have no peace in my heart my son was only 8 weeks and 6 days old. He was not a bunch of cells, he was a human being who had a heart beat. I was at the hospital when it all happen so I was able to know when he was expelled from my body I was able to see him and that’s when I was more assure of how wrong I had just done. Abortion it’s murder no matter how many excuses or reasons we have.
you are a liar. as an OR nurse i know for a fact that we do not show patients their aborted fetuses afterwards. you have no way of knowing the sex of an 8 week old fetus. my guess is you are some crackerjack pro life lunatic trying to scare people. every woman gets to decide what they do with their body. if you did not get counselling beforehand and really consider your options that is your own fault but don’t type such foolish nonsense.

Yeaaaaah. This is just dishonest in more than one way, which pretty much leads me to believe the entire thing is fabricated.
1. A premed isn’t a ‘medical student’ you should change that immediately. HUGE difference. Literally anyone in college can choose to be a premed. There is no selection process, you just sign up for the premed track and declare yourself a premed. Only difference is now you take classes like intro level biology and organic chemistry. Absolutely 0 medical qualification or selection whatsoever. This person is not “scientific” for being a premed, literally anyone who logs into bannerweb can change their major to say “premed” and can start taking intro level courses required for medical school ADMISSIONS. This person is just as much a “medical student” as anyone reading this is.
2. You absolutely can’t shadow abortions as a premed. Since like I said above, anyone in college can decide to be a premed with no selection process whatsoever, premeds are not qualified to sit in on something like an abortion. Shadowing for premeds consists of interviewing practicing physicians, and sometimes even walking in to clinical hours at the local family clinic. Shadowing an actual abortion? Yeah maybe if they were accepted to an actual medical program. Premeds aren’t qualified to sit in on something like an abortion, it’s actually illegal( HIPAA violation).
Judging by the fact that for two days straight this person was haunted by the “vivid images” they saw and couldn’t properly function, I have a feeling they won’t even make it to the medschool interview. Medicine is tough, medicine isn’t for the weak. If watching a professional medical procedure was enough to change their “core values”, I have a feeling they weren’t as “scientific” as they say they are. As an ACTUAL medical student, I myself as well as many of my peers have all been squeamish at some point. Why that would change your core values is beyond me. They saw something ugly that made them uncomfortable, that still doesn’t change any of the claims he made before about why they were pro-choice. None of those were adressed, they just changed what they wanted to believe because they got uncomfortable.
Hello! So recognize that you’re a medical student but don’t quite understand how you feel that the author is a total fraud…. I’m a “premed” student as well and I find validity in most of what he says.
While calling himself “scientific” is kind of a strange way to word it, being premed is quite scientific. You can’t say that general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemisty, general physics, general bio, molecular bio, cell bio, anatomy, advanced physiology and my years of laboratory research doesn’t qualify me as “scientfic”. I know there is much more to come but it’s a pretty good start….
Now, I’m kinda confused how you got into medical school without actually shadowing a doctor. Your description of shadowing is completely wrong. Your right anyone can be premed but I have shadowed numerous physicians of all different specialties meaning, I spent the day with them and visited all of their patients and watched and their procedures. Yeah it would be against the law if I didn’t sign the HIPAA forms…
Also, because I’m a premed student, the hospital let’s me volunteer in the ER for 4 hours a week and I’ve seen some pretty crazy stuff there!
It’s pretty harsh to say that he wouldn’t make it to medical school simply because he has a hard time with abortions. I have the hardest time watching eye surgeries. Something about them seriously makes me cringe. I however love watching brain surgeries. I’m a neuroscience major at my university and I know that my disdain for eye surgery doesn’t disqualify me from being a great neurologist one day.

I know several people including one of my best friends who were able to observe operations and other procedures in their 3rd and 4th years of undergrad who were planning to go to med school. So this is not unheard of. I’m surprised that, as a medical student yourself, you were not aware of this.
Also, this was in 2004 and hospitals were given till April of 2004 to come into HIPAA compliance. However, as with most new regulations, especially those that are debated and changed often, compliance is often riddled with grey area until people make mistakes and there are legal precedents. So it would not be surprising at all that there would be violations only a couple of months after they were required to be in compliance.
Finally, it would not be the first time a student(premed, in medical school, or even as a resident) found a procedure so objectionable that they could not stand to watch let alone participate or perform. There are documented cases of experienced doctors who quit performing abortions because of a case where the humanity of the fetus was so evident that it challenged their training and how they viewed an abortion. So while you bring up good points, I don’t think they are all valid given the facts.
I have a hard time believing this story, too. Regardless of your position on abortion, I find it really amateur of any sort of journalist/writer who pens a piece that lacks anything but anecdotal evidence. I could just as easily write a piece called, “Doctor Quits Job After He Realizes That Listening To Rap Music Causes Cancer”, and quote some moving testimony from a “doctor” and his “experiences”, just to prove my own point. I’ll believe this kind of article when there is an actual citation, and not just a shocking story designed to grab your attention and horrify you.

I come from a very ‘medical’ family (my granny was a dental surgeon, grandpa a GP, uncles who are dentists and physicians) and they all run the same schpiel that it’s not for the faint-hearted. I had the amazing opportunity,blessing, to hold my twin granddaughters born at 20 weeks. I witnessed their beautiful life. They did not expect them to live. They were both born alive. Nurse called for on call pastor to bless them because our pastor was over an hour away and would not ale it in time. Thosevgirlsvgotva double blessing. One from each pastor. Those babies experienced the love of their mother and smiled back and grasped yes grasped her finger. It may have only be one afternoon , Alger 2 hours, but it was the most amazing miraculous and beautiful experience. A miracle and LIFE…2lives. They are now we will we them again one day.

I too use to be Pro-Choice until i sat myself down and thought all those babies that were aborted could have grown up, had lives, paid taxes, and supported our government in many ways. I think the current statistic shows that like 50 million babies have been legally aborted in the United States. Another example that changed my view from Pro-Choice to Pro-Life was when I met a guy who compared the ongoing abortions to the holocaust which literally has no difference in the two issues. The holocaust was the mass killing of millions of innocent civilians and what are we doing today? Killing millions of innocent fetus’s or in the liberals case innocent blobs of tissue that has the potential to become life. If the liberals truly think a blob of tissue that has a heart beat and is moving around isn’t alive then what planet have you come from? I might sound like a right wing southern conservative but in reality im just some ordinary yokel who has used common sense and simple science to prove that what our fellow Americans are doing is not only morally wrong compared to the holocaust but also plain stupid. We have let around 1.4 trillion dollars in income tax go straight to the trash can (average 70,000 income * 40% = 28,000 * 50,000,000) since those potential babies could have grown up and paid taxes to the government.

I was hoping you had a true change of heart, that you saw it was morally wrong to take another life no matter the reason. I was truly disappointed that you looked on those little lives saved as nothing more than automatons that provide more taxes to the government. That is all they meant to you. How sad for you. I only hope that if you have a child of your own some day that he/she means more than that to you. These little ones are so much more.

It is unfortunate to see a child being aborted yes, and yes the ‘mother’ should have been more responsible. But has anyone consider these possibilites: maybe she is a drug addict-those toxins pass through a child and can cause severe problems in many ways-social/mental/etc. Most times treatment cannot reserve or improve anything; maybe she was raped and having the child will cause resenment or negative upbrining, maybe the woman didn’t want someone else to have her child-yet uncapable of caring for him herself, maybe she had a STD/AIDS/HIV that is untreatable-which will pass along onto the child. There are many scenario’s that can take place. I have had my child and cannot bear to ever think about doing that-but, there are many scenario’s.
Also-people who preform the tasks have their nurses or themselves explain the procedure in detail, and also make them watch a short film (not too sure how long it is) on what will be going on. Then procede to confirm to see if that patient wants to go with it-or if they would like to have another option (adoption/keeping the child).
But people are entitled to their own opinions and choices. No one should have the right to shove their beliefs down other people’s throat-whether it’s something they strongly believe in.
And what about the baby? Who will speak for it? Is it not the mother shoving her actions at the baby? Killing that baby….killing! Science can do many things today to help with almost any problem…all life is precious…All life is precious…Give your child a chance to live…
No one should have the right to murder a living being with a heartbeat. And other people DO have the right to object to someone else committing murder of innocent victims. If I see a parent beating up his child, it is my duty to call the police, otherwise I am aiding and abetting. And as far as “maybe the mother doesn’t ‘want'” this or that…. tough. She needs to not be selfish and should give the baby up for adoption if she can’t or doesn’t want to take care of it. Aiding and abetting murder is not an option.

Anonymous, I believe a woman should have the choice as to whether or not she wants to become pregnant but I do not believe she has the right to dispose of a child once she has become pregnant. If a woman is going to be sexually active she has to take the responsibility of preventing herself from becoming pregnant. Should she not be sexually active and becomes pregnant via being raped there is still no reason to abort that child. It is always possible and maybe advisable to put that child up for adoption. There are so many couples in this country who want children but cannot conceive that that child would more than likely find an instant home with parents to love him/her. There is never any reason to abort a child. God will always work it out. If necessary, He will take them back home with Him. But that should be by His hand and not ours.
Well there is a lot of family’s that would LOVE to have children and for what ever reason they can’t and they would LOVE to adopt that is the best option if she didn’t want the child not murder.I bet if instead of telling the mothers about the procedure and making them watch a video of someone else in the same situation and she made to listen to the heart beat of HER baby it would have a bigger impact……..just saying

Even if someone was raped, there is still the adoption option.
Also, there are plenty of miracle births that have happened. Ones where doctors said the child wouldn’t live outside of the womb, or that they would be deformed and not live long. But those docs have been proved wrong.

I attended medical school for about half a medical degree, and I wouldn’t have wished to sit in on an abortion procedure. Nothing was ever said of abortion, so far as I remember, in the 2/2.5 years I was there. I was thankful to have no qualification from the place. Even without being given any statistics on abortion, I just instinctually knew something was probably seriously wrong because the aura of corruption just oozed out of the place somehow. Many of the people just seemed too sure of theirselves, in general. Though I intended no attachment to those people, I still get flash backs of them, their personalities, how outwardly polished and articulate they apparently seem. Its very hard to reconcile the appearance of things, with the reality of what medicine actually stands for, these days. Its impossible for me to understand those people.
Praise God for opening your eyes and heart to the truth. I’m sorry you had to witness such a terrible act to see the truth. THIS is why people must see the pictures. This is why woman should have to see an abortion before she has her own.
I wonder why this pre-med student hides and doesn’t shout in the halls his opposition of this inhumane act. These woman should use condoms or birth control, but abortion should not be a form of birth control.
I agree that women should be responsible for their own birth control…whether it is the pill or condoms but we all must remember that sometimes things happen that are beyond our control such as rape…I think the child in this case should be allowed to be born and then if you feel in your heart that you can not raise it you have the option to make someone else very happy by giving the child up for adoption…it ends up being a win win situation all the way around.
Where do you live? You and I could have very good talking points about the establishment. I agree totally with your description of them. I am a registered nurse by trade and I had the same feeling when I was in training and sadly I do still feel as you feel.
